The National Guard's history in Niles, Illinois goes back to 1847. The first regiment of the National Guard was organized on November 3, 1847, in Niles. At that time, the town of Niles had only a small population and there were no local military installations. The regiment was composed of men from Chicago and other nearby towns. It served for three years before being disbanded on October 10, 1850. In 1861, when the Civil War began, the Illinois National Guard was called into service. The regiment was made up of men from Cook County and Racine County. It served until December 8, 1862 when it was mustered out of service. Since then, the National Guard has been stationed in various places around the state including at Carbondale (1870-1871), Rock Island (1872-1910), Decatur (1911-1920), Streator (1921-1929), Peoria (1930-1934) and Cairo (1945-1950). In 1957, the State Legislature passed a bill authorizing the formation of an armored car unit within the National Guard. On January 1st 1958, this unit became known as "The Northern Illinois Armored Car Unit" and still exists today
Niles, Illinois is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 71,468 at the 2010 census. It is the third-largest city in Chicago. Niles is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first European settlers in what is now Niles were French traders and fur traders who established a trading post in 1795 on the south bank of the Des Plaines River. In 1837, John Prentice organized and led an expedition to explore the new state of Illinois and found that its east side was more fertile than its west side which made it a desirable location for settlement. The town site was chosen by General James K. Polk as his future capital because it had good transportation connections with both Chicago and St Louis (then Missouri). The name "Niles" was given to this nascent community by General John Fenton, acting military governor of Illinois during the early years of its growth.In 1839, when Niles became a village under Act No. 531 of 1839, Joshua Ruggles donated land for a Methodist Church which stands today on North Clark Street near Dearborn Avenue. This church would become one of Niles' most important institutions - serving as a social center for farmers and their families until after World War II when it became known as Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral (later Metropolitano Italian Catholic Cathedral). In 1865, Captain Ebenezer Higgins organized two steamboats called "Eagle" and "Osprey" to transport goods from Milwaukee to his mill at Niles but these vessels never reached their destination because they ran into foul weather off Lake Michigan; eventually sinking off shore while loaded with cedar lumber on July 9th 1865 with no loss of life or cargo but $5 million worth of timber lost! On November 1st 1871 Judge Augustus Kelley granted deeds authorizing erection of three stores - First National Bank (now Equitable Life Insurance Company), Second National Bank & Trust Company (now Northwestern Mutual) and Third National Bank - within limits laid down by Congress in passed legislation entitled “An Act To provide For Certain Internal Improvements And For Other Purposes” thereby making Niles an incorporated village! Nile's incorporation status changed again on May 7th 1909 when acts were passed by both houses Of Congress entitled “An act to Provide for Corporations Countyills In Cook County” creating six townships within Cook County: Belleville Township (to the northwest), Darien Township (southwest), LaSalle Township (northwest), South Holland Township (northwest), Westchester Township (northern) - all portions then lying within present day Kaneohe Park district! These six townships would form what is now Kaneohe Park district including much former farmland now used for housing developments! A seventh township – Norridge – did not join until 1965! On January 1st 1913 Elisha Drake organized what would be known as Drake Elevator Company Limited with offices at 601 Wabash Avenue where he lived until his death in 1984; this company later became known as Southern Ontario Elevators Incorporated.. On October 16th 1915 citizens voted 3-1 in favor of adopting ordinances providing for women voters being admitted to any political meeting held therein without previous notice or identification...This establishes Woman's suffrage in Niles dating back to 1911! On Febuary 15th 1917 Mayor James Logue submitted memorials asking that City Council issue Resolution congratulating United States World War I veterans upon their return from overseas service...On March 2nd 1917 Resolution condemning German propaganda broadcasts aired over public radio sets throughout Kaneohe Valley was introduced...It failed 3-2 due to lack support from Council members)... On November 10th 1918 Mayor Logue submitted resolution requesting that City Council recognize Women's Day...It passed 6-0 becoming Municipal Holiday every February 19th through 25th inclusive!

The OH-6A Cobra has served as the backbone of many Aeronautical Specialty Units over the years, most notably being used by both air forces in Afghanistan and Iraq. It is also one of only two helicopters ever test flown with nuclear weapons on board (the other being a Lockheed P-3 Orion).

By 1840, the population of Niles had grown to over 100 people. In 1861, the Union Pacific Railroad arrived in Niles and quickly made it a center for daily commerce. The railroad also helped create a major industry in Niles – construction of dams and reservoirs. After years of growth, Niles reached its peak during World War II when its citizens contributed $8 million to the war effort. However, during the postwar years, violence and economic decline took their toll on the town. In 1985, however, Niles became an official city within Illinois which helped promote its revival as an important cultural center.
Niles is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 36,611 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Niles Township. The first settler in what is now Niles was Isaac Higgins, who arrived in 1809. A year later, he and his family built a cabin on the site that still stands today. By 1820, Higgins had a log cabin and four other small dwellings. In 1824, John Snyder established what is now Snyder's Corners Store in what is now downtown Niles. In 1830, David Dunham set up a gristmill west of present-day Main Street in what is now city limits Niles. In 1834–35, the Illinois General Assembly passed The Act for the Protection of Life and Property within this Territory (known as the Douglas bill), which provided for an eight-mile radius around Chicago with no land concessions to be given to any person or company without first acquired from nearby Native Americans by means of purchase or sale. This put an end to village growth near Chicago; however, early settlers did not give up their villages lifestyle and kept them functioning as separate communities until about 1840 when they were consolidated into one municipality under then-Governor Gabriel Richard's creation of Cook County." -from "Cook County History" by Jon Parshall
