It became part of the Chicago metropolitan area in 1955. Niles is located on the Fox River in northeastern Cook County and is bordered to the south by the village of Arlington Heights and to the north by Oak Park Township. The river forms an eastern border of Niles with Winnetka Township. To its east lies Lake Michigan; to its west lies Peoria Township. The first settlers in what would become Niles were farmers who arrived from New England during 1836-1837 as part of a wave of immigrants that sought new land for their families. John Niles had come overland from Massachusetts two years earlier, arriving at Patnawalka (now Plankinton) on November 15, 1835 with his wife and children.[1] The coupleestead was about 1 mile long and 500 feet wide, encompassing six acres (2 ha). They built a log cabin on what is now North Park Avenue just east of present day Main Street; it still stands today as a museum property known as "The Old Log Cabin". In addition to their farmstead, John also developed a small business importing goods from abroad into town via wagon train trips across country before selling those products fresh back home. The early days were difficult because there were no roads or rails yet within sight or experience of where they lived; therefore trading with other parts of Illinois was necessary for most things consumed.[2] In 1840 when railroads began penetrating western Illinois,[3] trade increased significantly because buyers could now get food items like flour from Chicago even while traveling cross-country![4][5][6] With access to good farmland around hereabouts, quality education for both parents became increasingly important for Factory Schooled children growing up during this time period - oneMrs Jameson recalls her memories... “We learned about cotton ginning and spinning woolen rags so we could make our own clothes” Mrs Jameson continued: “It was very hard work but we enjoyed it very much because it gave us satisfaction after going through all those trouble getting them made” . . . + As late as 1916 locals remember one man who did quite well running that small store doing everything from buying milk to making breads & pastries etc., Mr Haggerty Weems
