The Niles, Illinois Coast Guard Gift History begins back in 1892 when the first Coast Guard station was established on the present site of the current Niles Municipal Airport. The Station served as a dumping ground for all sorts of fishing gear and equipment until 1926 when it became a police department. In 1951, the Coast Guard Annex was built on land adjacent to the Municipal Airport and the Station changed its name to Niles Municipal Police Department. In 1969, Niles Municipal Government merged with Cook County and the municipal police department became part of Cook County Sheriff's Department. Niles, Illinois is a town in DeKalb County, Illinois, United States. The population was 8,521 at the 2010 census. The Niles-Eaton Sister Cities Agreement was established in 1984 between the cities of Niles and Eaton. It provides for city-to-city cooperation on issues such as regional economic development, education and health care coordination, and energy conservation. The first settler in what is now Niles Township was James Prentice in 1814. He platted the township name after General John Forbes' home village of Nilsen near Oslo, Norway. After years of growth around the post office (established in 1832), the town site was surveyed in 1855 by Jens Jensen Vestergaard and named for General Lewis Cassius Clay who had died two years earlier while serving as Ulysses S. Grant's secretary of war at West Point. In 1865 it was renamed after Lieutenant Colonel Augustus Herndon Woodson who had been killed while leading Confederate forces during the Atlanta Campaign three months earlier. By 1870 population numbers had reached 636; however rapid growth stopped soon afterward due to periodic drought that devastated crops and destroyed homes near water sources throughout much of central Illinois during this time period. Only 15% of residents even attended school during these early days; however because it was a part of DeKalb County government (and not one governed by Springfield), services like grocery stores, churches, doctor’s appointments etc were available without interruption from neighboring villages or towns until well into the 20th century when schools became statewide mandates with all municipalities operating their own schools within their borders! In 1860 George Stephenson donated land east of present day I-90 for a railroad station; construction began in 1863 but due to intense competition from other companies no track ever reached Niles until 1868 when an extension from Peoria ran through town just west of current day US Hwy 9 south to where it intersects I-90 today! This allowed farmers upstate to get deliveries directly to their houses rather than having to go through Springfield! The first store built in Niles opened its doors on July 10th 1865 - called "Clay's Store" after Lewis Cassius Clay - which would remain open till 1963 when it closed due to lack of customers and being replaced by a Sears store which still stands today! During World War II many German military prisoners were held here including several hundred SS officers who lived under conditions that can only be imagined! A large concrete bunker known as "the Tiger Cage" stood just east of Main Street across from what is now KFC fast food restaurant before being demolished over time! Still standing are parts of four original brick walls surrounding what used to be an underground garage complex beneath the stadium complex today... something you don't often see side by side anywhere else!! A few miles northeast along I-90 is another historical landmark - "Haines' Farmstead". Here on October 11th 1862 Reverend Ezra Haines located his farmstead after fleeing Missouri following Bloody Spring aka NashvilleJeremiah Greene's Raid wherein 100+ men were murdered by Union troops acting on orders from Brigadier General Nathan Bedford Forrest!!! Ezra & family became locally famous for their excellent turnipseed soup which they continued making right up until his death in 1917!!!! You can find remnants remaining today outside his barn/house combination adjacent to modern day Kane's Pizza & Fast Mart!!! Finally just off exit 95A off I-90 next door is another significant local landmark - "Parsons Home". Built c1900 by Amos Parsons Sr., this grand old structure still remains oneof America’s most beautiful 2 story frame dwellings complete with wraparound porch complete with 12 foot iron railingstill functioning today inside!!
