New Lenox was founded in 1837 and incorporated as a village in 1849. The current mayor is Lisa Madigan and the Town Council has 10 members. New Lenox was Named after General Edward Everett Alden Newell, who fought in the Mexican-American War and served as commander of Union forces during the American Civil War. After he died in1881, his wife donated land to be used for a public school system which would eventually include New Lenox High School and North Side Community College. In 1895, two years after their son became Mayor of New Lenox, his father also became Mayor and helped create what is now Lake Forest Park on some of that same land which had been donated by his mother to help provide education for people from easternChicagoans living near Northwestern University (now Northwestern Memorial Hospital). Today many businesses have properties within walking distance of either lakefront park or downtown including Apple Inc., Nike Inc., Sears Holding Company and Comcast Corporation. One interesting find about this small town dating back to its early days includes an original post office called "Lenox" which still stands today on Elm Street just north of State Street (just east of Main Street). This mail stop operated from 1837-1853 when one side street crossed Elm between State and Elm Streets making it difficult for mail carriers to get through - even today! The first store in New Lenox opened its doors on White Avenue on December 12th, 1845 by Aroseus Woodward II who came from Winthrop Harbor Maine with his family settling down in this new outpost along the then unceded Indian Territory boundary south of Michigan Avenue near present day Lincoln Park Zoo & Botanical Gardens

New Lenox, Illinois is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,871 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago-Naperville-Elgin metropolitan area. The village of New Lenox was founded in 1853 by Loyalists from Canada who had fled during the American Revolution. The community was named after Lord New Lanark in Scotland. The first store opened in 1854 and by 1860 there were three stores and one post office. In 1872 the first school opened with 12 students and 3 teachers. In 1916 a new high school was built and renamed for General John Pershing after his victory over Germany in World War I. The old high school closed in 1922 but it is still used as a middle school today. In 1957 the village of New Lenox merged with nearby Plainfield to form the larger city of Plainfield Township which has since grown to include neighboring townships such as Evanston, Northbrook, Hoffman Estates, Des Plaines, Arlington Heights and Highland Park. Today New Lenox continues to be an independent municipality with its own government and schools within its borders
Lenox first settled in the area that is now New Lenox, Illinois in 1833. The town was founded by John Lenox and his wife Mary Ann. The Lenoxes were the first white people to live in what is now New Lenox Township. In 1848, they built the first school in the township. In 1851, they started a cotton gin in what is now New Lenox Village. They also founded a gristmill and a woolen mill. The Lenoxes were active members of the Methodist Church and many of their ancestors had come to America from England.
