New Lenox is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 26,539 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. New Lenox is located on the Fox River near the city of Chicago. The first people to settle in what is now New Lenox were Native Americans who hunted and fished along the river. In 1836, Major General Zachary Taylor's army passed through this area during its march from Fort Dearborn to beleaguered Washington D.C., and one of Taylor's aides-de-camp, Colonel Amos Kendall, noted that "the country hereabouts excels anything we have seen east of the Alleghenies". In 1837, John Pemberton bought land at present day Wright Road and Old Lenox Road for $1,000 from a group of Iroquois buyers led by Captain George Biddle. He built his house there in 1840 and named it "Lenox". When he died in 1847 his estate went to his nephew Amos Kendall Jr., who renamed it "New Lenox". In 1865 an act designed to promote agricultural growth in Cook County (then called DuPage County) was passed; as part of that act New Lenox was placed within that county. The town had a post office established on October 7, 1868 under the name Newtown Center but changed its name to New Lenox on May 30th, 1893 after receiving a donation from Mrs Anna Biddle Dodge (1849–1924), widow of Amos Kendall Sr.. Mrs Dodge had been born into a wealthy family in Boston but when her father died she inherited nothing and so traveled extensively throughout America visiting farms where she learned how they raised their crops. After her death she left money behind which helped make possible the establishment of many local charities such as First Congregational Church (now Trinity United Methodist Church) which was founded by Rev Dr Samuel Eliot Morison with Mrs Dodge's money in 1907 and still operates today; another prominent charity which started out with Mrs Dodge's money is Christmastime Night Out which helps low income children receive gifts for Christmas every year since 1955; also starting out with Mrs Dodge's money was The Village Shop which provides groceries for low income residents free or at very reduced prices every week during winter months During World War II much effort went into developing munitions plants near Lake Michigan shoreline just south of town so industry could provide employment for war workers while nearby factories produced materials needed for American tanks and planes being produced all over Europe; however most production stopped shortly before Pearl Harbor because Japan became involved in World War II without asking America if they should participate since our ally Great Britain did not declare war on Japan until early 1945 when they actually were making preparations to do just that! New Lenox, Illinois is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 146 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and has a population of 521,746 as of 2019. New Lenox was settled in 1836 by Captain John Goodrich and his family after being driven from their home in Darien Township by Native American Indians. The Goodrich home still stands today on State Street near the intersection with Green Street. New Lenox was first known as "Lenox" because General George Washington's brother-in-law Colonel Samuel Lenox purchased land here in 1793. The name would be changed to New Lenox soon after when settlers were attracted to its natural resources (especially coal) and its strategic location on the western border of Cook County that led to early growth in this part of Illinois. The town's first school opened in 1837, making it one of the oldest educational institutions west of the Mississippi River. In 1862, New Lenox became one of 137 communities located within Fort Worth City Limits due to the Ulysses S.
