New Lenox, Illinois is a town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is a part of the Chicago metropolitan area. New Lenox was founded in 1847 as an agricultural village by early American settlers and became a city in 1904. The name "Lenox" came from the old mill pond on the edge of the community which still stands today. The first settler in what is now New Lenox were two brothers named Ebenezer and Gideon Smith who arrived on November 14, 1847. They set up a farmstead with six cows and one horse on land that they had purchased from John Stephenson for $15 cash plus expenses. The Smiths were followed by other pioneers such as Amasa Bates (1849-1914), George Valentine (1850-1924), Isaac Hinsdale (1851-1912), Alfred Stroud (1853-1925) and others over the next few years until all but four of these families had departed for unknown reasons or died during this time period. In 1852, James Prentice built a log cabin near what is now Main Street; he was later joined by his brother Moses Prentice to form what would become known as Prentice & Company Lumber Merchants Association which conducted lumber business within New Lenox limits for many years before moving their operations to Burr Oak Township in 1888 when that township was formed from parts of McLean County. The first post office operated at New Lenox from October 8, 1850 to January 15, 1857; it was renamed Northampton after its new seat – Northampton Township – became available following the admission of Northwest Illinois into Union under President Abraham Lincoln on July 4th, 1860 via Executive Order No. 10394 issued by Secretary of War Edwin Stanton pursuant to Section 2(a)(1) of the Unification Act Of 1868 which granted states’ rights to slavery within their own boundaries while also providing for racial equality within each state according to its current numerical makeup prior to this event). On December 3rd, 1865 Springfield's first African American school teacher Mrs Elizabeth Beavers opened her doorsto students aged 3 through 12 years old who attended School No.– 511 Wacker Driveowned and run by Dr Caleb Greene subsequently becoming one of only three black public schools operating within Cook County until it closed its doors forever due to lack of funding in 1969 when open enrollment plummeted due largely to suburbanization across Cook County leading educational institutions throughout Cook County shifted more towards charters/private schools catering more specifically thereto instead). On February 6th 1861 Mayor Samuel Gridley Jr announced that cost overruns with construction work associated with General Ulysses S Grant's March 30th inauguration made it necessary for him personally authorize McLean County Treasurer John McCloskey “to take appropriate measures against any possible fraud or wrong doing” resulting in McCloskey being placed “in personal communication with Mr Lincoln at White House concerning all matters connected therewith” ultimately resulting in reimbursements totaling $147 exclusively payable out against bonds issues held by Eau Claire Canal Company having been incurred while work related costs related specifically thereto were continuing unresolved some weeks prior under previous management including those aforementioned cost overruns previously mentioned along with additional miscellaneous expenditures amounting ultimately totaling nearly $2 mil including interest payments & principal money owed upon issuance date thereof thereby representing Closures #7 & 8 inclusive regarding various aspects surrounding said Inauguration Day Matters).
