New Lenox is located on the eastern edge of the city of Chicago and straddles Lake Michigan to its east and west. According to the 2010 census, New Lenox has a total area of 22 square miles (59 km²). The town was first settled by Germans in 1836 as Wellesborough Township. The name originated from Reverend John Wellesborough's family home in England which he bought in 1836 while still living there. In 1847, New Lenox became a village when it annexed portions of neighboring townships: Hortonville and Arlington Heights. In 1870, it amalgamated with Lincolnshire to form what is now Cook County. New Lenox is one of the poorest communities in Cook County according to "Forbes" magazine's "50 Worst Cities for Poverty". The high poverty rates are due largely to bad economic conditions and social factors such as low literacy rates among African Americans who make up over half of the population and limited access to education or health care opportunities for most residents. In recent years there have been efforts made by some community members and local officials to improve conditions within the town limits by investing in infrastructure such as new schools and community center; expanding bike paths; creating jobs through businesses based inside or near town; improving lighting along arterial streets; creating more affordable housing projects; and engaging in neighborhood watch programs that discourage crime among their own citizens
