When the first navy ships were built in the 1860s, Naperville was one of their most ardent supporters. The city decided to contribute money to help build warships and donated land for the Navy Yard. Over time, Naperville's support for the navy has become a history-makers itself. The city's love affair with naval service began during World War I when it donated vessels and equipment to help fight on the front line. In 1919, Mayor Harry Harkins dedicated an ice cream parlor in honor of sailors who had died in action. From then on, sailors and their families could enjoy refreshments while visiting Harkins' restaurant. During World War II, Naperville contributed boats, planes, engines and other supplies to the navy. In 1945, Mayor Harry Slessor dedicated a new park just for naval veterans in honor of their service to our country. The USS Constitution served as the flagship of Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd's Antarctic expedition (1914-15) and as a training ship for naval aviators during World War II. In 1951, she was transferred to the Soviet Union as part of the Treaty of Moscow and became known as "the atom bomb boat". She was scrapped in 1991.
