Naperville, Illinois is a city located in the Midwestern United States. The population was 102,827 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in DuPage County and also contains part of Kane County. The core of Naperville is on the east side of Chicago Avenue and north of I-270. The western edge includes parts of Downers Grove, Elmhurst, and Wheaton. The area that would become Naperville was first settled by Native Americans in 1773. They named their new village after North Bend, Indiana – then part of Canada – because there were similarities between their cultures and those in North Bend. By 1800, Naperville had a population of about 350 people. In 1825, land grants were given to four men who would be instrumental in developing what would become Naperville: John Stephenson as captain general for DuPage County; Nicholas Hennepin as one of its two judges; and Amos Kendall as surveyor for Cook County. The railroad arrived in Naperville in 1854 with three miles (5 km) of track connecting it to Chicago via Aurora Avenue. At first, trade goods such as flour and lumber were transported by boat from Rock Island Terminal on the Mississippi River to downtownChicago using steamboats or wagons hauled by oxen or horses across country roadsides during winter months when snow covered most areas. This method took many weeks to get there due to navigation difficulties caused by prevailing winds which could gust up to 100 mph (160 km/h). Naperville is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 25,811 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1847 by John H. Napier and his family. The name of the town is derived from the French word "Napierville" meaning "a place where cows graze." The first settlers were Horace Greeley and his family who arrived in 1837. Their farmstead was located on present-day West Ottawa Street between Washington and Dearborn Streets. In 1840, brothers Amos and Solomon Brown acquired a tract of land east of Naperville on the Illinois River opposite Naperville Township Lots 4 and 5 which they named North Prairie after their father's estate near Northampton, Massachusetts. They also improved the riverbank for farming purposes with their sawmill on East Roosevelt Road (now called Main Street). In 1846, George Stephenson donated land to form what is now Naperville Township along with other donations from friends such as Samuel Morse and Ezra Stiles.
