The first settlers to Mundelein were the Beavers who built a cabin on the site in 1836. A post office was established in Mundelein in 1857 and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. The township seat was moved from Newton to Mundelein in 1908 after Newton's incorporation into DuPage County. According to the 2010 census, there are 10,898 people living within the township limits (of whom 6,711 are registered voters). Of these residents, 7% identify as Black or African American; 9% as Hispanic or Latino of any race; and 72% as white alone. According to the 2000 census, Mundelein has a total area of , all land. Mundelein was founded in 1814 by the Reverend Abraham Mundelein and his wife, Rachel. The Mundeleins were Presbyterians who moved to Illinois from Holland. From this farm, the Mundeleins taught school and preached Christianity to farmers and others in the area. In 1828, they had five children and decided to move back to Holland. Reverend Abraham Mundelein died in 1829, but his wife continued teaching until her death in 1858. Their two daughters married and started teaching schools of their own. One daughter became a nun while another became president of DuPage County (now Chicago). In 1916-1917, both daughters moved to live at Holy Cross Priory in Rome, Italy where they stayed for three years as missionaries before returning home to start new families there. In 1920-1921, Reverend Anna Loring Mundelein founded Saints Anthony and Maurice Seminary in Mundelein which continues today as one of the largest seminaries of its kind in America. Additionally, several churches have been built on or around the original farmstead including Our Lady of Loretto Parish Cemetery which is within walking distance of Mundelein Central High School; Stations Church on Maple Street; Resurrection Chapel located across from First Methodist Church; Christmastime lights along Clinton Street near Third Street; John Lennon's house just north of town off I-80 between Illinois Highway 4 eastbound exit 6A/7B; and many other places throughout town including Harmony United Methodist Church (originally built on land owned by Reverend Abraham Mundelein), Sacred Heart CatholicChurch (built 1915), Blessed Sacrament CatholicChurch (built 1924), Saint Rita's RomanCatholic parish (built 1951), Presbyterian church also known as Emmanuel Bible Episcopal congregation Built 1927) MundeleIN has been a central part of community life for over 160 years!
