The first Coast Guardsmen were hired in response to a request from the Mayor of Mundelein to provide security for his private home during prohibition. The Menomonee River valley had become a hot spot for smuggling and Trafficking in Persons because of its strategic location. In order to combat this problem, the town voted to establish a coast guard station in 1922. The first Station was built on Cedar Street and became operational on November 1, 1922. It consisted of two officers and twelve enlisted men who patrolled the area between Cedar and State Streets. The Station served as an important Patrol Force until it was replaced by lighthouse protection in 1953 when new towers were erected at State and Main Streets. In 1978, the Department activated its E-boat Unit which provided assistance with Search and Rescue operations when necessary along the entire Illinois coastline. This unit continued operation until 1985 when it was placed intoactivated due to budget cuts within the Coast Guard bureaucracy.
