Mount Vernon Coffee was founded in 1865 by John Jacob Astor and his wife Lucy. The first coffee house opened in Mount Vernon on the corner of Second and State Streets. In 1875, the company moved to what is now called Dearborn Street and continued to grow. In 1905, they became one of the first companies to distribute ground coffee through mail order.
Mount Vernon, Illinois was founded in 1812 by John Mount Vernon and his wife Polly. The town is located about 12 miles west of Chicago on the border of Cook County and Kane County. The Mount Vernon Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. The Mount Vernon area had been inhabited by Native Americans for centuries before Europeans arrived. By 1800, there were over 100 Indian villages in the area that included present-day Mount Vernon. In 1812, John Mount Vernon purchased 1,500 acres (500 ha) of land northwest of Chicago from the Winnebago tribe for $5 per acre ($40 total). He named his new tract "Mount Vernon" after himself and his wife, Polly. In 1815, when Illinois became a state, President James K. Polk created a U.S. military post at Fort Dearborn in what is now downtown Chicago to protect American settlers from Native Americans who had begun inhabiting the area around that time. In 1818, Congress passed an act creating a national park called Point Lookout National Monument which encompassed most of what is now downtown Chicago as well as parts of what are today suburban Cook County and Kane County. The original boundary for Point Lookout National Monument were two miles (3 km) due east of where Mount Vernon currently stands; however, this decision was later changed to include all surrounding land within Parkland until it was increased to 4 square miles (10 km2) in 1920 by another act underPresident Woodrow Wilson (). In 1824–25 John Mount Washington built a home on Holmes Avenue near today's State Street in what is now DowntownChicago (). This house served as the first permanent settler building in Chicago and remains one of Chicagos most recognizable landmarks.. In 1830 he sold additional property northward to rename it Prospect Park which would become one of Chicagos largest parks with over 350 acres (130 ha). Today's Northwestern Side neighborhood forms part of this originally planned parkland reserve.. John Washington also donated land southward along Lincoln Boulevard which still forms part of today's Roosevelt Island () off Lake Michigan shoreline.. From here he could watch ships arrive at Navy Pier becoming one half mile (1 km) offshore from where he lived until his death in 1865.. Upon John's death his widow Polly continued living at their home until her own death in 1830... After Polly's death many members took up residence at various locations including New York City (), Baltimore (), Philadelphia (), Boston () etc., but finally just Pittsburgh () late 19th century...
