TheMount Vernon Army post is one of the oldest in Illinois and has been in operation since 1837. The army post was founded by General David R. Jones, who served as the first Commander in Chief of the Illiniwek Infantry Regiment. Today, the Mount Vernon Army Post contains a museum, a library, and an event center which offer visitor experiences that range from military history to natural sciences. The Mount Vernon Army Post was originally established as an infantry regiment named the Illiniwek Infantry Regiment on October 1st, 1837. Because of its early history and location within Illinois, the Illiniwek Infantry Regiment quickly became well-known throughout the state. In 1841, General David R. Jones renamed his regiment The Mount Vernon Infantry Regiment after the then current town of Mount Vernon in central Ohio where he had been born and raised. In 1861, Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Williamson assumed command of The Mount Vernon Infantry Regiment following colonel Williamson’s death at sea during the American Civil War. From 1861 until 1865, The Mount Vernon Infantry Regiment fought service under both Abraham Lincoln and Ulysses S Grant during their respective terms as President ofthe United States. During this time period, The Mount Vernon Infantry Regiment also saw action at Gettysburg National Military Park as part of Union troops under Major General William Tecumseh Sherman’s charge against Confederate forces entrenched there on July 3rd 1863. After Sherman’s battle victory over Confederate forces at Gettysburg National Military Park on July 3rd 1863, many soldiers from The Mount Vernon Infantry Regiment transferred to Federal units stationed along the Eastern seaboard in preparation for hostilities with Southern states later that year following Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation issued January 1st 1862 designating all slaves within any slaveholding states free upon successful emancipation efforts made by Union troops or their agents operating therein). As a result of these transfers - which also included members of TheMountVernonArmyPost-1/2 (including future Mayor Frank Jankowski) - Lake County became one of only two counties in Illinois to fall completely under Federal jurisdiction following Union victory over Confederate forces at Vicksburg Mississippi onJuly 4th 1863 (the other being Cook County). Mount Vernon, Illinois is a small town located in DuPage County, Illinois. The town was named after George Washington and his family. The first settler in Mount Vernon was Nicholas L. Johnson in 1827. Over the years, many people have moved to Mount Vernon from other parts ofDuPage County. Today, the population of Mount Vernon is over 900 people. The Town of Mount Vernon was established on November 1, 1847 by order of the General Assembly of Illinois. At that time, it consisted of just a few homes and farmsteads around the corner from what is now the downtown area of Mount Vernon. Through hard work and determination, however, the town grew rapidly and by 1860 had a population of 350 residents. In 1862, when Fort Dearborn was built within Decatur Township to protect Chicago during the American Civil War (1861-1865), much activity took place in and around Mtvernon as soldiers barracks were constructed there. By 1865, when Fort Dearborn was decommissioned and all troops were withdrawn from Decatur Township eastward towards Quadraville Landing on Ia Dragaheka Creek for storage purposes in anticipation of that county’s annexation into Chicago under new territorial laws which became effective on October 1st that year (the “Enumeration Act”), Mtvernon had grown to 2200 residents with over 60 businesses providing services for its citizens including churches (bothMethodist and Episcopal) school board members who ran local academies., post office(? open until 1865), Masonic Lodge No.(? open until 1865) In 1871 Congressman John Fenton traveled through DuPage County looking for sites for Congressional districts; he found interest in areas surrounding Mtvernon but did not establish any congressional district there because no townships were then organized within Du Page CountvLy at that time outside Cook Valley On July 10th 1870 Drury Bros & Company laid out a large lot adjoining their home at 5th Street and Niles Road southwest cornering Harrison Ford Rd; this lot became known as Broadway near today’s State Capitol Annex building It should be noted here that Ft Dearborn encompassed nearly all present-day Mtvernon except part situated southeast along Harrison Ford Rd just south of where Greenbacks Llc now stands - being annexed into Chicago only days later This strip between Broadway/Ford Rd., Harrison Ford Rd., north side NW corner SSE Of Capitol Annex building & Congress Ave./Niles Road long ago served as an industrial area catering to horse drawn wagons carrying goods down nw side alley behind annex buildings before turning westerly onto Broadway
