The Navy was first stationed in Mount Prospect during World War I. In 1919, a Naval Air Station (NAS) was established in Mount Prospect and grew to include a squadron of Boeing P-8s. NASmount Prospect played an important role during World War I as it helped provide air support for naval operations. After the war, NASMount Prospect continued its role by providing training for new officers and sailors. In 1937, NASMount Point became part of the newly created United States Naval Forces Europe (USNFE). The purpose of USNFE was to ensure American neutrality during World War II by supplying troops and equipment to member nations.
In 1941, USS Nimitz arrived in Chicago from her voyage from Pearl Harbor. She served as flagship for Commander-in-Chief Pacific Fleet at that time until she decommissioned on 15 May 1942 after being hit by a kamikaze attack off Japan’s southern coast on 8 December 1941. When USS Yorktown arrived at Chicago eight days later, she became Flagship Commanding Pacific Fleet under Nimitz’s command until her retirement on 14 May 1945. USS Yorktown was struck by kamikaze while operating off Japan's southern coast; this caused major damage but no loss of life or hull integrity due to radiation exposure. USS Nimitz had been damaged quite severely before her decommissioning so it underwent extensive repairs which took six months. During her repairs, she became known as "USS Yorktown" once again. Mount Prospect is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,382 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and is the seat for the Township of Mount Prospect. The village was founded in 1847 by fur traders from Canada as a trading post on the Galesburg-Marion Railroad. It grew rapidly thanks to its location near Lake Michigan and its easy access to shipping lanes through Lake Erie. By 1870, Mount Prospect had become an incorporated village. In 1872, it became one of thirteen townships in Cook County when it was created from portions of three other villages: Arlington Heights, Cicero and Northbrook. The township's first mayor was George Hinton Sr.. From 1860 until 1920, Mount Prospect served as the capital of Illinois; this role was taken over by Urbana after Springfield closed its doors following defeat in the1920 presidential election that year. In 1925, however, Mount Prospect reverted back to its original name when it became one of twenty-six municipalities within Cook County that were merged into new counties named Chicago (and all other municipalities east of Racine were transferred to Kane County). Mount Prospect has since seen rapid growth due to development around its core business districts – notably along State Street between Westmont Avenue and Northwestern Avenue – as well as suburban expansion both north and southward along I-55 and I-290. Today, Mount Prospect is home to some 20 shopping malls and two professional sports franchises (the Bears/Illini wrestlers team played their first game at Wrigley Field in 1907) as well as over 100 private businesses totaling more than $2 billion in annual sales statewide alone*. The township's economy continues to be based on manufacturing—mainly agriculture but also textiles, plastics and electronic products—as well as services such as health care and education.* This growth has led to increased crime rates**; however*, with continued investment by local authorities* including a police force that has been ranked number 1 among U.S. law enforcement agencies by "Sherlock" magazine***/,* attacks against storefronts have decreased markedly overall.*
