The Mount Prospect community has been a part of the United States military since its inception. The town was originally settled by soldiers from Illinois, who fought in the Mexican-American War and the American Civil War. In 1866, General John McClernand donated land to the town for a public school. The first post office in Mount Prospect was established in 1870. The first United States Military Academy was opened here in 1881.

The Mount Prospect Historic District is a national historic district that includes 19 buildings dating from 1871 to 1914. The Mount Prospect Business District covers an area of 201 acres (87 ha) and has over 100 businesses. It is known for its large apple orchards and its preserved downtown core which features a Victorian-era building with art deco exterior, the first steel frame library in Illinois, and other commercial buildings. The first European settlers in what would become Kane County were two brothers who founded West Point on the west side of Chicago in 1836. After a few years they moved their settlement to what is now Mount Prospect because of good soil and views of Lake Michigan. They named their farm "Mount Prospect" after nearby Mount Rushmore National Monument. In 1871 when construction began on the new State Capitol Building in Springfield, Illinois, members of the state legislature decided to locate their capital within easy reach of Warsaw village on the north shore of Chicago's lakefront. So they voted to move the capitol from West Point to Mount Rushmore instead of spending money on moving it again and so it remained there until 1931 when it was moved back to West Point under president Franklin D Roosevelt as part of his New Deal program intended to promote economic development across America's rural areas by creating jobs in government agencies such as postal service and education department construction projects). Mount Prospect is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 54,824 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cook County and home to the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign. Mount Prospect was founded on November 6, 1836 by Captain John Marshall as a trading post on the east side of the Rock River. The name "Mount Prospect" first appeared on a map dated December 1, 1836. The first white settlers in what is now Mount Prospect were James Maunders and his family from Connecticut who arrived in 1837. They named their new town after their mentor, Colonel Jonathan Edwards (1753-1827), an American statesman and theologian who served as Bishop of Worcester (1798-1828) and President of Yale University (1901-1902). In 1840, George Washington Polk became Governor of Illinois and announced plans to create four counties in central Illinois: Kane, McHenry, Willamette, and Edgar. Maunders offered his land for government sale but no one took him up on it because he could not afford to buy it himself. By 1841 there were only twenty settlers living in Mount Prospect when Polk announced that all future land sales would be via public auction rather than through private purchase like previous years. In October 1840 Captain John Marshall set out from Mount Hope with eighty men under his command including five women pioneers – Lillie DillinghamMarshall's wife Sarah Ann Dunham; Margaret Morse; Electa Blackstone; and Abigail Adams – to explore what lay beyond the Great Lakes region then known as Canada. On November 6 they reached what is now Mount Prospect just north of where Chicago now stands after crossing therock river via ferryboat into upper Rock River Valley where they built their initial cabin according to Indian language instructions given to them by Chief Sachem Wabash during a Council meeting held at Kankakee Mission near present day Chicago on August 25th 1830s This council had been convened following Tecumseh's Rebellion which began July 30th 1830 when British troops burned down Springfield Armory outside Chicago while General Winfield Scott was attending a peace conference at Green Bay

The village was founded on October 7, 1827 by John and Eliza Thomson as a post office called Mount Prospect Station. The first postmaster was James Macdonald. According to the 2010 census, Mount Prospect has a total area of , of which (or 99% of it) is land. As of the census of 2000, there were 1,521 people resident in Mount Prospect Village. There were 1,611 people living in housing units built before July 1, 1990. The racial makeup of New Mount prospect Village as reported by the US Census Bureau was 98% white and 2% black or African American
