Gourmet Coffee History in Mount Prospect, Illinois Mount Prospect was founded in 1867 as a small town on the north side of Chicago. It quickly became known for its delicious coffee and other produce. The town's location made it an ideal place to grow beans and roast them. In 1916, Mount Prospect began selling its own coffee. The first store was located on Wabash Avenue. Over time, the store grew into a sizeable empire with dozens of units across the city. In 1951, Mount Prospect merged with nearby Elmhurst to form the larger Elmhurst-Mount Prospect Corporation. At this point, the company had over 100 stores across the city and state of Illinois. The company continued to grow during the postwar years. By 1960, they had over 240 stores across North America and Europe. Gourmet Coffee also produced their own espresso machines at this point in its history. During this time, Gourmet Coffee also entered into partnership with other brands such as Keurig and Nestle (later acquired by Nestle). In 1984, Gourmet Coffee announced their retirement from business operations completely. Mount Prospect is a township in Cook County, Illinois, United States. As of the 2010 census, its population was 18,917. The township was formed from part of Rock Island Township on May 1, 1847. It was named for Mount Prospect in Middlesex County, Massachusetts. The village of Mount Prospect had a population of 268 in 1910 and 553 in 1930. In 1960 the village had a population of 712 and it is now an unincorporated community within the township. The first post office was established at Mount Prospect on October 8, 1847. Located near Chicago's Loop area, Mount Prospect became an important commercial center during the late 19th century because it offered easy access to railroads that served other parts of Illinois and Wisconsin. Many manufacturing companies were located here including Armour Manufacturing Company (now JCPenney), Cement Works Company (now Ameren), Ford Motor Company (later Jaycar), Singer Sewing Machine company (now H&R Block) and Wernicke Glass Company (later Gruner + Jahr). During World War II many factories closed due to wartime rationing but many residents took up farming or worked as truck drivers or other manual laborers for local businesses such as meatpacking plants or paper mills. After the war many jobs moved away from Mount Prospect but some new industrial developments continued to grow here such as Gruner + Jahr Pharmaceuticals which opened a plant in 1961 which manufactured psychiatric drugs until their acquisition by Shire Pharmaceuticals in 2001; Belk Companies purchased a major interest in AMI Paper Mills before its sale to Quaker Oats Corporation in 2005; and Continental Grain Corporation leased an adjacent Roger Smith mill site for grain storage before being sold to Archer Daniels Midland plc., announced by Archer Daniels Midland as Imperial Bulk Storage Incorporation on January 1st 2009 with 659 acres surrounding it all dedicated to grain storage with more than 5 million tons currently stored there at any one time
Mount Prospect was founded in 1814 by a group of fur traders. The town grew quickly and soon became the largest settlement in Northwestern Illinois. Mount Prospect became a thriving community, with churches, schools, businesses, and a population of over 1,000 people. The town experienced several setbacks during the late 1800s, including an outbreak of fever that killed many residents and a financial scandal that caused many businesses to go bankrupt. However, Mount Prospect steadily rebuilt itself and emerged as one of the most prosperous communities in Northwestern Illinois. In 1924, the town merged with neighboring village of Plainfield to form the larger city of Plainfield.
