The navy has a long and proud history in Morton, Illinois. The city was named after Rear Admiral Samuel Graves Morton, the first U.S. Naval officer to die in action against Spanish forces during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). The navy's first base of operations was on the old Fort Dearborn on the banks of the Chicago River. In 1854, Rear Admiral John C. Frémont organized and commanded a squadron of United States Navy ships which invaded Mexico City to protect American citizens there from an attack by General José Joaquín de Santa Anna. The navy also played a significant role in establishing modern naval warfare when it joined forces with other nations during World War II. After World War II, the navy shifted its focus towards armaments and space exploration, but returned to active duty in 2010 as part of President Barack Obama's nuclear strategy review process. In recent years, both the navy and city have enjoyed growing support from private individuals and businesses who have contributed money towards Ships at Sea Memorial Park (SHAMS), Navy sailors' memorials located throughout downtown Morton, and various civic projects such as building new light towers or renovating old buildings in town center. SHAMS is one of several maritime memorials that are sponsored by USS Peacemaker Foundation - a nonprofit organization founded by Admiral Morton's widow Mary Bartlett Goldin in memory of her husband - which helps promote maritime education around the world through sponsoring educational events and promoting maritime heritage around the world. In 1951, Rear Admiral Samuel Graves Morton donated two sailboats (USS Ponce de Laredo) to be put into use by local organizations within 60 days for community service work along Chicago riverbanks between Wabash Avenue and Michigan Avenue upstream from State Street dockage area where they would remain until sold back to Navy officials in 1957 pursuant to then Mayor Richard J . Daley's pledge that no public funds would be used for any municipal purposes other than providing access to open water waterfront areas adjacent state property without charge or permit from state government officials... Morton is a small town in the state of Illinois, United States. The population was 2,213 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Peoria metropolitan area. Morton is east of Carbondale and west of Normal. Morton was founded in 1820 as a small community on a farmstead near Carbondale by Samuel Morton and his family. In 1871, it became one of the original towns in the Peoria metropolitan area when Carbondale separated fromNormal. Morton has experienced many changes over its history, including being annexed by Chicago in 1932 and becoming an independent city in 1961; however, it remains a locally important town with close ties to its rural surroundings. Today, Morton features a shopping center, post office and two churches: First Presbyterian (founded in 1888) and Second Presbyterian (founded in 1907). The first settlers were Scottish immigrants who arrived beginning in 1820; they built homes around what is now downtown Morton while others established farms within miles of town. By 1871, most residents had left for better opportunities elsewhere within Illinois or other states due to Ohio's hard economy during the American Civil War (1861-1865). However, some new settlers arrived soon thereafter - among them James Whetsell who purchased land just east of downtown from John Davenport Sr., founder of Davenport Mercantile Company - helping to create what would become known as "The Hub" district around downtown which still retains much architectural heritage dating back to that time period. In 1932, Chicago annexed Morton along with all but three other municipalities within Peoria County when Peoria merged with Cook County to form theIllinois General Assembly following passage of the Jay-Zilver Act (1932). At that time, Morton emerged as one of several African American communities within newly blackened Chicago; it remained an important community until moving into decline after 1960s black flight outstripped local job growth and white suburban expansion into eastern Cook County leading to increased crime and poverty therein. Today, remnants of traditional Black-owned businesses can be found throughout Downtown Morton while pockets exist throughout economically diverse neighborhoods adjacent to DUIs south/west OF Downtown which offer excellent access to quality jobs & affordable housing! Despite these challenges posed by economic inequality & social isolation over recent decades – especially against larger counterparts such as Aurora IL – mortaronians continue characteristically vibrant spirit despite faced adversity!

Morton, Illinois is a small town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 753 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Morton was founded by Daniel Morton and his family in 1811 as an agricultural settlement on the banks of the Illiniwek River. The first school in Morton was built in 1812. In 1862, Morton became one of the original towns in McLean County. The town was merged with neighboring Aurora to form Aurora-Morton Township on January 1, 1971. The township has since been dissolved and its residents have moved to other communities within McLean County or outside of Illinois. The history of Morton began with Daniel Morton and his family who settled there in 1811 from Huntingdon Township, Pennsylvania along the Illiniwek River for land that he had purchased from Chief Whitehead (or Wabash) after winning a series of Indian wars which included three years against him and his band of warriors led by David Leslie (1775-1847). After purchasing 2 million acres (8 km2), including present day Morton, Daniel founded what would become known as "the Landmark" village near where he now lives - a log cabin complex measuring around 25 feet wide x 50 feet long x 10 feet high typical of pioneer villages northeast of Springfield during this early period when farmers were becoming familiar with new technology brought over by Europeans such as railways which made transportation possible for goods more easily reaching their markets than ever before. Both logs were cut downriver then transported across country to be erected at site where they remain today - proof that even during these difficult times folks were creative in finding ways to make life easier for themselves and their families! Daniel's grandson John Dennett Orchard also lived there during this time and later served as Mayor from 1922 until 1924 after being elected on a platform supporting prohibition which helped push Congress towards passing Prohibition into law following President James Kossuth's successful campaign against it! In fact many early settlers here took up alcohol prohibition rather than follow Kossuth who wanted to import European-made liquor instead! However things changed quickly thereafter when Andrew Johnson became president and called for legislation legalizing manufacture/distribution/purchase only for distilled spirits which would apply only to white men while continuing Prohibition inside America! This big change not only caused social unrest but also prosperity because manufacturers suddenly found themselves able to sell much more product at lower costs thanks largely to increased competition emanating from Europe!! Unfortunately too many Americans followed Johnson's example & decided that they could handle things better alone so soon after becoming president instead of working together towards common goals! This resulted in another period characterized by economic stagnation due primarily to regionalism & individualism instead of cooperation!!! Consequently society slid back into some levelof disorder & poverty that we still experience today although thankfully not on an all-time high like it once was!!! So much for Mr. Johnson's promisedrenticehoodreform.. huh? Anyway back onto our story... This very same year 1865 saw a fire starter discovered near what is now bathroom building #4 about 1/4 mile south east corner road intersection just west side property lineline Of Chapel Hill Road!!!! Remember THAT date?? That glorious day when everyone woke up Wednesday morning April 12th 1865 fully expecting good weather Conditions ?? Instead it started raining cats & dogs hard right through breakfast lotschi done laundry 3rd Elementary School tornado evacuation drill went off without any warning !! Unexpectedly homeowner’s association meeting convened immediately prior tstorm causing extensive damage entire town center including several churches personal residences barns etc!!!! Resulting loss $22500 dollars!!!!! Who knew something like THAT could happen????? Something tells me we won't forget those little darlings anytime soon LOL
