Morton, Illinois is a town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,746 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago–Naperville Metropolitan Statistical Area. Morton was founded in 1868 and named for General George Washington Morton. The first post office in Morton was established in 1870. In 1890, the town became a city when it joined the Chicago metropolitan area. Morton's economy is based on agriculture and manufacturing. The townsite that includes present-day Morton was originally covered by forest land that was used for hunting, trapping and fishing. Most of this land has been lost to development since then but some remnants remain such as the old railroad right-of-way that now provides access to Interstate 80 through town center. The first settlers to move into what would become Morton were farmers looking for a new home after their crops failed in nearby communities such as Peoria and Rockford due to bad weather conditions caused by Lake Michigan's ice cover during wintertime. By 1868, there were only five people living in what is now Morton when it became a territory of Illinois under Ulysses S Grant following the American Civil War; these included four men from New York who had gone overland from Missouri Territory on their way home to help spread news of Lincoln's victory over Robert E Lee at Gettysburg on November 14th 1865: John Wirt (a fur trader), Hiram Bogan (a miller), Christopher Fenton (the future mayor of Chicago) and John Dolan (a carpenter). Fifty years later, in 1890, when Morton merged with other towns within Kane County including Skokie and North Manchester to form Chicago Transit Authority's "North Side", one could still see evidence of early pioneer days even though so much had changed within those fifty years: two small homes built about 1840 still stand side by side on Elm Grove Road near today’s South Shore Drive intersection; they are known as “Homes No 1 & 2” because they were both offered for sale by Wirt Brothers Auctioneers Incorporated before their purchase by CTA upon merger which included all three settlements; also remaining from earlier days are many barns/storage buildings which have been replaced or adapted since then with more modern technology; most notably an electric streetcar line ran through downtown where it crossed State Street just south of current day Northwestern Ave./Lake Shore Drive formerly served as its southern terminus before terminating at Marshall Field’s original store building located north across State Street near today’s Northwest Ave./Kankakee Rd., just east of current day Marshall Fields former equipment yard

Morton, Illinois is a small town in the state of Illinois. It was founded by John Morton in 1827. Morton's store and post office were the first in the community. The town grew rapidly after he opened his business, and by 1830 it had a population of around 100 people. In 1833, Morton created the first school district in the state of Illinois. The town was incorporated as a village in 1837, and its name changed to Morton on January 1, 1850. The village had a population of 750 people when it merged with neighboring townships to form the city of Streator on July 1, 1893. Morton's economy relied heavily on agriculture until World War I; during that time, it produced goods such as flour and butter for local markets and exported goods such as lumber and potatoes to other states. After World War I ended, the economy shifted towards manufacturing; Morton became one of America's leading manufacturers of radios, TVs, autos and other products during this time. However, after several years of decline due to competition from foreign companies, Morton entered into receivership in 1984 and filed for bankruptcy protection in 1990.
