Morton was founded by farmers in 1838 and named for General James Morton, who fought in the Mexican–American War and later became U.S. Minister to Mexico. The first post office opened in Morton on April 14, 1839. Morton is located at (41°27′36″N 88°24′50″W). According to the 2010 census, Morton has a total area of , of which is land and (0.6%) is water. As of the census of 2000, there were 3,717 people, 1,521 households, and 926 families residing in the town. The population density was 139 people per square mile (57/km²). There were 1,653 housing units at an average density of 64 per square mile (25/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 98% White; 0% African American; 0% Native American; 0% Asian; 0% Pacific Islander; 0% from other races; and 2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latinoof any race were 2% of the population. There were 1,521 households out of which 33% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53% were married couples living together, 11% had a female householder with no husband present., and 24% were non-families. 20
