Morton, Illinois is a town in DeKalb County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,868 at the 2010 census. Morton was founded in 1847 by John Morton and his family. It became a town in 1871. In 1902, the Chicago Northwestern Railway built a line through Morton to Aurora, Illinois; Aurora became Morton's main rail terminus. The railroad closed down in 1948 and all tracks were removed from the town. The first coffee shops open up here! Here are some of the earliest examples of artisan coffee roasting: One such shop was The BREAKFAST COFFEE SHOP which opened its doors on December 1st of 1892 right near what is now Hwy 6 south of town! This small shop started out sourcing beans direct from Africa and roasted them themselves- an unheard of feat for that time! This early example of artisan coffee roasting shows how important it was for people to have their own source for their favorite beverage - something that we take for granted today! Some more notable Coffee Shops opening up throughout Morton include: THE JOE'S GARAGE COFFEE SHOP which opened its doors on June 15th 1899 just one week after Wrigley's chocolate milk hit the shelves! Joe's Garage served classic Americano’s with cream and sugar until 1971 when they transitioned to French Press service due to popular demand (and profit)! UPSTAIRS BAR & BUSINESSES had their FIRST OPENING HERE ON JULY 21st OF 1893 RIGHT NEXT DOOR TO JOHN MORRISON'S FARMHOUSE! UPSTAIRS BAR & BUSINESSES would later become known as "The Lion's Den" due to their support and contribution towards MTN sports teams including being one of the first places where football tickets went on sale back in 1896!!! All these cafes/bars helped fuel downtown Morton growth over the years- giving residents plenty opportunities to meet each other face-to-face and start enjoying some great artisanal coffee while socializing away those winter days !!

The first settlement in Morton was made in 1836 by Daniel Boone and his party of pioneers as they crossed the Kankakee River from Indiana into Illinois. The first post office was established in 1837. Morton's fame as an agricultural center began with the planting of corn and other crops by John A. Dorrance Sr., who founded what is now Dorrance Manufacturing Company in 1902. Other early settlers included George Wagoner, who arrived in 1847; Hiram Senter, who came in 1859; and James Hargrave, who arrived in 1862. In 1893, a railroad line was built through Morton to reach Chicago via Carbondale and Normal; this led to increased development of the town center and its economy because it facilitated easier access to transportation and commerce for residents. In 1922, Morton became "the pink city" when its mayor named it "the prettiest place on Earth." During World War II, Morton played host to many military activities including training camps for the U.S Army Air Forces during 1944-1945 – Operation Crossroads – which were conducted adjacent to Kankakee Lakefront Airport north of town; these activities caused some damage to infrastructure but no fatalities or injuries reported

Morton was a small town in central Illinois, United States, until the early 21st century. Morton had a population of 1,500 people in 1910 and 2,000 people in 1920. The town was founded by pioneers who arrived in 1839. The first post office opened in Morton on December 4, 1840. In 1844, Morton became the county seat of Potter County. The first school was built in Morton on October 15, 1845. In 1907, the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad reached Morton through nearby Clearfield Township. This made it easier for goods to be transported from Chicago to Morton and other parts of central Illinois. At this time, many farmers were moving their operations to larger towns because of this railroad linkages. Morton changed hands several times during its history before becoming part of the city of Peoria on November 1, 1922; however it reverted back to its original name on January 1, 1924 when Peoria became part of the new city Limits system within newly created Streator County (renamed Cook County). I n 1925-1927 there was a great fire that destroyed most businesses including schools and churches located just east side main street which is now used as a playground
