The Morton Air Force Base was home to numerous air force installations throughout the years. One of these installations was the Randolph Aircraft plant, which produced Boeing aircraft from 1941-1948. From 1941-1945, Randolph produced the R-16 and R-17 models of the B-24 Liberator bomber. The bombers were used in World War II as strategic bombers and played a significant role in defeat of Japan. After the war, Randolph continued production of the bomber until it was shuttered in 1948. In 1945, while at Randolph, Aviation Technology Research Laboratory (ATRL) was established to develop new aircraft technologies for use by military and civilian organizations. ATRL’s first project involved designing and constructing an experimental jet fighter, known as XF-14A “Thinman”. The jets were built atRandolph AFB under Project Thinman and flew for the first time on October 20, 1947. During its existence at Morton AFB, ATRL developed several types of aircraft including: F102 Delta Dagger interceptor; TWA 747 passenger plane; NASA Manned Maneuvering Unit (MMU) launch vehicle; Northrop Grumman Paveway IV cruise missile; Hughes HCS-1 weather/communications satellite system; Hughes HSAC VHF voice/visual communications satellite system; McDonnell Douglas DC9 airliner
