Morton Grove is a city in Illinois, United States. The population was 26,671 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in Cook County and one of the five most populous cities in Illinois. Morton Grove is located on a small island in the Chicago River between downtown Chicago and the Midway Airport. The first people to live here were the Potawatomi who built their villages around what is now Park Ridge. They left behind numerous pottery shards, arrowheads, beads and other artifacts that have been found all over northwestern Illinois and southern Indiana. One of these shards from Morton Grove's earliest history has been carbon-dated to about 1795 AD! In 1814, General Anthony Wayne founded a post house called Fort Dearborn on the east side of Lake Michigan just south of present day Arlington Heights. The first European settler in this area was Francois Xavier Courcelle who arrived with his family in 1814 from Quebec City, Canada. He set up a store near what is now Cicero Ave & North Shore Rd., then known as Indian Point Road or simply "Pricewater" because it ran along part of today's Cicero Ave. Two other families followed him: John Medley and his sons Jabez (John), Joshua (Josh) and Nicholas (Nicholas). All four brothers started detailed farming operations which grew into large plantations by 1830 when Jabez had 10 slaves working for him on 155 acres (65 ha). It was not until after 1800 that Americans began arriving here as traders; they brought salt beef, salt pork, flour etc., but did not build permanent homes until well after 1830 when land prices became too high for early arrivals to justify building elsewhere on an isolated peninsula without access to markets or transportation." In 1836 two more families moved here: Simon Bolivar Sexton and James Shields - these two families would form what would become known as "the Smiths". By 1840 there were over 25 families living here including many Baptists who had come from Kentucky during that year’s chaotic War Between The States. In 1846 Rev Dr George Haggerty arrived with his wife Elizabeth Jane Haggerty from Vidalia Georgia to serve as pastor of St John’s Episcopal Church – he would stay here until his death in 1899 .Rev Dr Haggerty was instrumental in helping start village schools c1850 which helped spur economic development . In 1861 Mgr Abraham Lincoln came downriver with 700 soldiers for Operations Crossroads leading up to the American Civil War; at Mill Plain he ordered construction of three stores/cities – Morton Grove being one – which functioned as troop barracks before military withdrawal leaving town completely lax during Reconstruction period .
