The town was first settled in 1855 by Scots-Irish immigrants who had emigrated to America from Ireland during the Great Famine. Morton Grove was incorporated as a village on November 3, 1892. As of the 2010 census, its population was 7,827. It has since grown rapidly due to nearby Aurora and Wheaton becoming larger municipalities and more residents moving into the township over time. In 2000, Morton Grove became one of only two townships in Kane County (along with Grayslake) to be completely within city limits; it also annexed neighboring Evanston Township on December 1 that year. The annexation created a new school district which included most of Morton Grove proper as well as parts of Winnetka and Riverdale neighborhoods outside of Aurora and Wheaton respectively.
