Morton Grove is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. It is located east of Chicago on the shore of the Fox River. The population was 5,878 at the 2010 census. Morton Grove is home to four military installations: Fort Sheridan, Fort Hood, Camp Victory and Camp Roberts. The first military installation in Morton Grove was Fort Sheridan which was established in 1849 as a part of the federal government's effort to consolidate land grants in Illinois. The fort served as an artillery battery and garrison until it was sold to the state of Indiana in 1868. In 1898, during World War I, Fort Sheridan became a training ground for new American soldiers before it reverted back to Indian control in 1916. In 1944-1945, Fort Sheridan served as headquarters for First Army Corps during World War II known as "The Big Three" campaigns against Japan because they were all commanded by General George Custer. During that time periodFort Sheridan also hosted the 6th Infantry Regiment (National Guard) which fought with distinction at Ia Draga National Park on September 4-10 1944 during Operation Crossroads which led to Japanese surrender due to heavy casualties sustained by American forces combined with stellar Japanese performance at April 14-18 1945 called Battle of Midway Ridge where US units managed to destroy two main Japanese armies without lost any personnel or equipment thanks largely to cryptologic contributions from Major Charles Kappler and Captain Sidney Shephard who had been working at Kapsburg Hall under Professor Franklin D'Amico when he discovered Hut 8 via his analysis of enemy radio traffic from March 9-April 3 1942). In 1961 Fort Hood was converted into an infantry battalion command post followed byCamp Roberts later that year becoming Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion 1st Brigade Combat Team 2nd Infantry Division (United States Army) which concurrently organized with Third Infantry Division (i.e., now Fourth Infantry Division) concurrently activated on July 17 1951 Korean War service members who had previously enlisted with Second Brigade Combat Team Eighth Cavalry Regiment serving primarily as advisors/ trainers while their unit absorbed Ninth Ranger District personnel providing law enforcement support including community policing; these troops deployed along route 66 between Inchon and Seoul Today Ft HOOD remains one of America’s largest DoD installations housing more than 252000 Soldiers sworn into service since its activation over 50 years ago!
