In 1938, the Illinois Air National Guard's 1st Bombardment Wing was activated at Morton Grove Airport. In order to meet these needs, Congress authorized funds in 1948 for yet another airport project – this time at Morton Grove – which would be used primarily for transport purposes rather than passenger services like those that had been available at earlier airports. Despite some initial problems with planning and construction (which included several accidents), by 1957 Morton Grove Airport had become one of America's most popular tourist destinations thanks to its convenient location within walking distanceof many Chicago neighborhoods as well as its various amenities such as restaurants, hotels, movie theaters, etcetera. Today, USAF Gift Employees are sent home with various items, including clothes, books, electronics, tools and more. Many times these gifts are symbolic of how much the employee enjoys their time soldiering for their country but also provide unique experiences that can't be found anywhere else.
