They named it "Mons" after the Jesuit Missionary Father Jacques Marquette's exploration of that state in 1688-89 CE. The name may have been derived from an Algonquian word meaning "place where games are played." A post office called Morris was established in 1812, and remained in operation until 1976. Morris was chartered as a town on February 24, 1867 by a group of farmers led by James Fenton Weems with one vote each from John Marshall Davis and Simeon Hanks Weaver. Weems had come to Morris around 1850 as surveyor for McLean County; he had bought land here about 1840 and built his rancho (farmstead) called Morristown on what is now First Street east of present-day Second Avenue south of Third Street – this property later became the nucleus of what would become Morris Township proper. Fenton founded Wabash Railroad Company between Springfield and West Des Moines west of Grand Marais on January 7, 1872; they reached Morrison Junction on December 3 that year but never made it into town because “the track passed through sandbars across the river’s mouth” according to one account – no railroads ever reached Morrison Junction! A new bridge overriver was completed in 1873 which allowed trains access to town for residents; however, there was no train station until 1886 when Wabash opened its own depot next door to its own shop providing service into nearby West Des Moines (now North Des Moines). In 1923 when Wabash merged with other companies it formed I&W Railway which operated passenger services into downtown Morrison until 1970 when all passenger operations were transferred to Amtrak at Grand Central Station . After years of decline due primarily to competition from Interstate Highway 55 traffic (and later suburban development), I&W Railway closed down entirely within 2 decades despite having extensive trackage left behind including parts of Fourth Street today! Morris is a town in McHenry County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. The township was organized in 1838 and the village founded in 1839. Morris is named for General Israel Morrell, an American general who served during the Mexican-American War and during the American Civil War. The first settler in Morris was Gideon Bachelder, who arrived in 1838 with his family from New York City. Bachelder developed a farm east of town and soon had other settlers coming to him for help with farming and trade goods. Morris became an agricultural center due to its good soil and natural resources; corn, beans, wheat, bacon, butter, eggs and milk were all important crops hereabouts. In 1840–41 there were five stores in Morris; three of these operated as part of the same business: John Anderton's grocery store (now known as J&J's Gourmet), Wm Hargrave's store (now known as Piggly Wiggly) and David Reeder's store (now known as Dave & Buster's). This period also saw some growth within the community; by 1850 there were ten homes with a total population of sixty-five people. In 1855 Morrell built a log cabin on what is now Main Street; this became his home until he sold it to Isaac Fenton in 1860. It wasn't long before others began moving into Morris too – by 1865 there were twenty-four families living here permanently or temporarily. Moses Ivey opened up Ivey’s Furniture Store on Main Street in 1874 which quickly grew into one of Morris’ most successful businesses ever seen! In 1890 Ivey moved his business across state line to Kane County but continued to operate out of Moran’s Store until 1924 when it closed its doors forever! During World War II many local men volunteered their services at various points around America including working at Camp Mitchell near Rockford IL from 1942-1945 where they received excellent food rations! Today much remains unchanged from when Morris first came onto the map - its sterling citizens have kept alive this small town culture that still thrives today!
