Morris, Illinois is home to the oldest coffee roaster in the United States. The original roaster and founder of the now-defunct Morris Coffee Company was George W. Deutsch, who opened his business in 1867. In 1914, Deutsch's son-in-law, Harry Fenton, took over the business and ran it until its closure in 1978. As coffee prices increased throughout Europe during the 1970s and 1980s, La Collezione del Lungo Rivo began exporting its beans all over the world; eventually selling them to some of Italy's most famous cafes including Il Giardino delle Belle Arti (The Garden of Fine Arts), Benares Cafe (Benares Place) and Sant'Angelo Sociale della Montagna (Santo Angelo Sociale della Montagna). As coffee prices continued to increase throughout much of the 1990s, interest among consumers waned among small shops that could not compete with larger commercial grocery chains on price or convenience alone. However, there have been a few exceptions: Luigi Colli's successor at La Collezione del Lungo Rivo as well as two other smaller shops – D'Italia Coffee near Lombard Street in downtown Chicago and Starbucks – have both reopened after being closed for several years due to financial difficulties or competition from larger chains like McDonald’s or Dunkin’ Donuts/.
