Morris, Illinois is a small town in the northwest corner of Cook County, Illinois. It is located on the east bank of the Chicago River and about 12 miles (19 km) southeast of downtown Chicago. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. Morris was first settled by English colonists in 1779. It became a village in 1836 and a town in 1857. The current name originated with John Morris, an early settler who named his farm after himself. Morris was one of six townships that made up what is now Cook County; it merged into the larger county in 1903. The City of Morris was founded in 1924 as part of a plan to build an eastern bypass for Chicago through Cook County and make Morris more accessible from downtownChicago via mile-long streetscape boulevards. The city's charter was amended to allow for annexation by neighboring municipalities, including Glenview and Skokie, but it never formed reality because no other cities annexed Morris. Morris was founded in 1836 by Isaac Morris and his family. The town was named for General Jonathan Logan Morris, who helped bring about the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854. In 1861, the Union Army moved through Morris on its way to battle at Pea Ridge; after the battle, General George McClellan ordered all arms to be confiscated from civilians in order to prepare them for war.
