In 1863 when Douglas MacArthur was temporarily headquartered at Carbondale while commands were organized around Cairo or Peoria, he visitedMorris on October 25 accompanied by First Lieutenant Edwin Easley to present his report on cavalry operations at White Oak Swamp which took place two days later on October 28th just south of Carbondale where MacArthur stayed over night before continuing his journey northward that day to Cairo where he relieved Ulysses S. Grant at Devicesville early November 3rd following a three-day engagement including one bloodless battle at Newton Mill Creek Bridge over Trumbull Creek between Confederate forces commanded by Brigadier General Robert Ewell (laterMajor General James Longstreet) under Colonel Joseph Hooker & Second Lieutenant Augustus Herrman against Elements composed chiefly of Companies A(7th) & C(10th) Missouri Volunteers under Captain George Hoggarty
