The United States Air Force is one of the most venerable and well-respected institutions in our country. It has played an important role in American society for over 60 years and its members have given their all to protect our nation. The USAF's history can be traced back to World War I, when aircraft were used to transport troops and supplies across Europe. In 1941, theAAF was created as a result of the Second World War and it became a force multiplier by providing air support for ground campaigns in Europe. During the Cold War, the USAFPlayed a critical role in Defense against Soviet bombers, missiles, and submarines. Today, the USAF continues to provide 1st through 5th generation fighter aircraft that are essential for defending America and her allies. To celebrate its 70th anniversary this year (2015), we thought it would be fun to look at some of the more memorable gifts that have been given to members of the USAF over the years! Here are just a few examples: In 1957, General Curtis LeMay gifted two F-86 Sabres to Colonel John Boyd Simpson Jr., Chief of Staff at Luke AFB near Phoenix AZ. Colonel Boyd flew these planes successfully into battle during Operation Eagle Claw which was fought against El Salvadorian forces in June 1958. This event is considered one of America's darkest days as many lives were lost including those of several US Air Force personnel who perished during combat operations with El Salvadorian forces on that day. After victory had been secured by US Forces, Colonel Boyd offered his Sabres for display at Wright-Patterson AFB where they remain today as part of history buffs' collection! In 1978 General Hap Arnold presented four Republic A-4 Skyhawks (of which only two survived) from RAF Metheringham AB UKto Major Bob Snyder Headquarters Air Command Center USAFE at Tinker AFB Oklahoma City OK - these planes served as Flagship Aircraft for ContinentalAir Services Incorporation (CASI) - an airline manufacturer/operator based out of Wichita KS - until 1987 when CASI merged with Northwest Airlines effective 3rd January 1987 forming United Airlines Corporation (UAL). These planes remained part of Air Command Center USAFE until they were sold off to various operators around 1990 prior to being donated or leased back into service by United Airlines Corporation again effective 15th October 1990 having served as Flagship Aircraft operated by Washington National Airport between 1988-1991 inclusive utilizing Hangar #1 adjacent thereto On 15th October 1990 representatives from United Airlines Corporation along with historical artifacts such as hangars #1 & 2 adjacent thereto toured Washington National Airport hangar #1 exhibiting items including four Republic A4 Skyhawks formerly belonging to RAF Metheringham AB UK . On presentation night following flight liveries removal from museum Exhibit ceiling followed additional program featuring business class passengers enjoying hamburgers prepared by airport concessionaire .
