The United States Air Force has a long and proud history of deploying gift baskets to military and civilians in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. In the early days of the war, when U.S. forces were small and dispersed, basket distributions were made on a case-by-case basis. Often commanders would authorize one or two baskets for each unit, based on the generosity and appreciation of their troops or civilian contacts. As the war progressed, it became increasingly important for the Air Force to send items that could not only commemorate but also help support Operation Iraqi Freedom’s missions. Accordingly, in October 2003 Congress passed Public Law 107-189 which created The Pentagon Gift Program (PPG). PPG provides funding to air force bases throughout the country to provide gift baskets for all service members and civilians who visit them during wartime. Since its inception, PPG has distributed over 1 million gift baskets to military and civilian personnel in support ofOperation Iraqi Freedom.
