Montgomery is a city in Montgomery County, Illinois, United States. The population was 7,821 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Montgomery County. The city was named for General Nathan Bedford Montgomery, who served as Superintendent of Education for Illinois from 1881 to 1886 and Mayor of Chicago in 1892. Montgomery has been inhabited by Native Americans since the 17th century. A post office called "Montgomery" was established in 1800, and remained open until 1867. In 1868, land near present-day Montgomery was donated by James Hickey to form what would become Montgomery Township. The first settler in what is now Montgomery Township was James Piggott Jr., who built a log cabin on his farmstead on March 20, 1869. In 1870, the township's first school building was erected on the site of today's Montgomeryshire Elementary School (now known as English Magnet Middle School). That same year saw the opening of Montgomeryshire Drug Store which still stands today across from First National Bank located at 5115 S Prairie Ave., within walking distance of downtown Montgomery Village & all businesses that used it during its heyday: banks (First NationalBank), grocery stores (Grocery Outlet Inc.), movie theaters ( Regal cinema), hair salons (& more) In 1895 the Knoxville and Pittsburgh Railroad crossed through what is now downtown Montgomery and construction began on tracks leading northwest from this point towards Knoxville; these tracks were later extended south to Carbondale The arrival of automobiles soon led to increased development along US 60/I- highways running through town - making everything easy access for motorists – including many small businesses that had never before seen large scale traffic outside their doors Downtown merchants quickly realized they couldn't compete with prices charged by larger retailers on I-highways out there & so decided to close up shop or move away altogether One such business that did not fold however? The original Post Office - which moved into its current location just east of First NationalBank in 1954 when old Main Street became too narrow for their new building & refused to move again after several decades! You can still see an old plaque inside their current lobby commemorating this fact

Montgomery is a small town in Montgomery County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,695 at the 2000 census. It has a post office with ZIP code 62401. The first settler in Montgomery was John White who settled on the east side of the Kankakee River in 1837. In 1850, Samuel Ballard settled on the west side of the river and became one of its earliest landowners. By 1865, most of what is now Montgomery had been established and by 1870 there were over 100 residents. In 1892 Edwin Ladd purchased two thousand acres (twenty-six hectares) of land east of present-day Montgomery from Jonas Burt for $1,000. This large tract would become one of Montgomery's numerous holdings until it was sold to Congressman George Norris in 1949 for $27,500 (). Norris renamed it Montrose Township after himself and his wife Nellie Montrose (). Most people who live in Montgomery today are descendents of those that lived here during its early years: pioneers such as John White, Samuel Ballard, Edwin Ladd, Jonas Burt and George Norris. Many businesses that have thrived in our town include First National Bank (founded 1907), Southeastern Illinois Telephone Company (founded 1928), Ralston Purina pet food plant (founded 1935), and local radio station WTVR-FM (licensed to Montgomery since 1938).
