Montgomery, an American general who fought in the Mexican–American War and played a leading role in suppressing slavery in Texas before his death in 1881. In 1902, Montgomery became one of twelve towns consolidated into the Village of Arlington Heights which had a population of 3,000. The village lost its status as a municipality when it merged with Rockford to form that city's first municipal district in 1957. The town's economy centered around agriculture until World War II when heavy industry began to grow there; however, during that time Montgomery also developed some businesses such as a hospital and two high schools (Montgomery High School and Lincolnwood Senior High School). The post-war years were difficult for many residents due to increased competition from cities like Rockford and Chicago; nevertheless, many people did not give up on their community or decided to fight for its survival even though they often didn't have much success. In 1951, after more than fifty years of growth without any major changes to its infrastructure or demographics, Montgomery incorporated as an independent city. The incorporation made it possible for the town's residents – especially those living near downtown – to experience more spacious streetscapes and better access to services than they could have experienced had they been living within the limits of their original village. For example, Montgomerys could now walk or take public transportation directly from their homes into downtown Springfield. This process has helped make Montgomery one of Springfield's most successful municipalities since its incorporation. Today, Montgomery is home to over 30 percent of all Springfield’s overall population having grown steadily since 2000 while still maintaining strong ties with its agricultural roots—namely through corn farming and hay production.
