Montgomery is a town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,827 at the 2010 census. Montgomery is part of the Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1849 and named for General George Washington Montgomery. It was laid out on a land grant from James K. Polk and became a county seat in 1857. In 1898 it incorporated as a village and reverted to its original name in 1900 when it became an unincorporated community again. The post office at the time served only residents of the village, not residents of Montgomery itself. In 1907, the first electric streetcar service ran through Montgomery; this service was discontinued in 1912 because of financial problems. The first paved road through Montgomery dates back to 1919 when the Illinois State Highway Commission built a bypass around it that connected with I-395 northbound and I-470 southbound near Carbondale (now Edwardsville). In 1955, after three years of planning under then-Mayor John Ladds, construction began on what would become known as "the Civic Center," which would include a library, high school annexes (later renamed for Rev. Dr Martin Luther King Jr.) and housing for employees of local businesses within walking distance of each other on Main Street between Wright Boulevard and Park Avenue NW #1 across from National Cathedral Chicago's main campus on Adams Street Sq., just south of downtown Ottawa ON Canada's Parliament Hill building which at that time still served as Canada's national capital city - Monty Donuts being one such business located nearby! When completed in 1957 it represented one small step towards bringing economic development to what had been an agricultural area until that point! Montgomery, Illinois is a small town located in Montgomery County, Illinois. Situated on the border of Montgomery and McHenry Counties, it is the only village in Montgomery County. The population was 1,522 at the 2000 census. The first settlers to Montgomery were farmers who arrived around 1816. By 1834, the community had a school and two stores. In 1853, the railroad arrived and transportation became more important; as a result, many businesses moved to downtown Montgomery from rural areas. The post office opened in 1865 and remained open until 1953. In 1901, voters approved an option for annexation by McHenry County; this led to the creation of Montgomery Township in 1903. Manufacturing began arriving in Montgomery during World War I; by 1918 there were six businesses operating in town. After World War II ended, agricultural activity declined but manufacturing did not go away completely; during that time there were three businesses still operating today: one clothing store, one furniture store and one truck dealership. In 1951, when McHenry County merged into Cook County (then known as Chicago), Montgomery became part of Cook County’s new township system which continued until 1983 when it reverted back to its original county form. Today there are just four businesses remaining: two restaurants and two convenience stores which together employ about 80 people- all of whom are employed within local government services such as police patrols or road maintenance work
