Montgomery has been named for General Robert E. Montgomery, who served as Commanding Officer of United States Forces in Europe during World War II and as U.S. Ambassador to Great Britain from 1951 to 1955. The community was founded in 1892 by residents of nearby Lawrenceburg and was incorporated as a village in 1903. The first post office at Montgomery opened on October 24, 1892. The name change to Montrose in 1907 and then Montgomery in 1912. The population growth accelerated during World War I when munitions production increased along with demand for goods generated by the war effort; however, due to restrictions placed upon tempo by President Woodrow Wilson, the population peaked at 12,000 early in 1918 before declining gradually over the next few years as businesses closed or moved away due to competition from larger towns such as Chicago and St Louis. The 1921 US Census counted 9 blacksmiths but no other farmers because all land had been given away for housing development (a practice known as "white flight"). In 1930 there were only 4 blacksmiths living within 2 miles of town limits while 21% (53 out of 727) of households were headed by women according to federal data collected that year; this number would decline progressively over time until 1935 when it reached 8%.
