Montgomery was founded in 1834 by Captain John W. Montgomery and his family, who named it for General Montgomery's Creek, one of the forks of the Mississippian River in central Indiana. The first store in Montgomery was built on Spring Street by Capt. John W. Montgomery and his brother-in-law, James Caldwell, in 1834. In 1850, Capt John W. Montgomery donated land to form a village called Montrose which would include parts of what are now Addison and Park Heights neighborhoods on the south side of town; these areas were annexed by Montgomery in 1896 when Park Heights became a part of Chicago city limits.]] Captain John W. Montgomery passed away in 1881 but his wife continued to run the store until her death two years later.]] In 1892, Mrs Johnathon Atherton started selling groceries from her home on Elm Street which soon become an important stop for travelers along State or Northwest Highway running through downtown Chicago.]] In 1899 Dr J[ohnston S.] Hennepin opened up his general dispensary here with 5 doors and 100 druggists across three floors].]] The post office moved into its present building at 9th & Michigan Streets around 1911.]] By 1915 only four other businesses remained: Mrs C[harles K.] Wishard's grocery (later Empire Grocery), Rube Goldberg's hardware store (closed 1923), Mr F[rederick G.] Weldon's bakery (opened 1925) and Dr J[ohnston S.] Hennepin's general dispensary (now Holt Pharmacy)]. ]] Other businesses that arrived during this time included Mrs Mabel Pappanis' dress shop (1915), Harry Mason & Co.'s dry goods store ( 1916–17), Mr Joe Sheehan’s barbershop/beauty salon ( 1918–20) and Frank B.[ebeke]'s gas station/ hotel (. . .) ]. With World War I looming large over America, many industry leaders took up arms to help make America great again such as Marshall Field III who created Sears Roebuck Department Stores which made Sears America’s leading Retailer];[] At war’s end there were few jobs left so men returned home to take advantage of wartime industries such as farming and mining.} In 1924 Mayor Edward Byrne announced plans for expansion into downtown Montgomery which led to construction of what is now First National Bank Building on Erie Boulevard just east of State Avenue.} In 1929 First National Bank merged with Peoples Trust Company forming what is now JPMorgan Chase bank.} In 1948 First National Bank merged with Guaranty Loan Corporation forming Guaranty Casualty Insurance company]} Restoration efforts began after fire destroyed much of downtown Dayton} On October 16th 1951 following years worth restoration work including relocating streetslights throughout downtown Dayton} The new MainStreet Administration Center was dedicated} After more than 50 years it closed its doors effective March 8th 1961}}

Montgomery, Illinois is a small town in the state of Illinois that was founded in 1836. It is now a census-designated place (CDP) and has a population of 5,542. The first settler in Montgomery was John P. Cook. Cook arrived with his family from Kentucky in 1836 and built the first house on the current site of Montgomery. The community was named after General James Montgomery, an American general who fought in the Mexican-American War and then served as governor of Missouri during the Kansas–Nebraska Act crisis. In 1865, Montgomery became part of Union County, Illinois following the merger of Union and Sangamon counties into the new state of Illinois. In 1870, it became a village under Republican Party control after voters decided to unify all three townships which make up its core area into one municipality. By 1880, it had reached its present size with 478 residents. After years of growth and development, Montgomery achieved municipal status on December 12, 1907 with a vote by its citizens over whether or not to become part of Chicago proper. The village has since enjoyed high levels of success both within city limits and beyond; for instance, it has been home to several colleges including Northwestern University and Loyola University Chicago; hosted multiple Olympics; played host to numerous world championships throughout various sports; and is currently home to two professional teams: the Chicago White Sox (MLB) and Chicago Fire ( MLS ). Montgomery’s rich history began shortly after its establishment as a village – in 1907 – when members of local government formed an advisory committee to investigate what changes could be made to improve civic life within their borders.
