Montgomery is home to the United States Army Garrison Montgomery and its various units. The Army Garrison was established in 1815 as part of the Illinois State Militia and continued to be an active military presence until 1951. As of 2013, the Montgomery Garrison has over 11,000 soldiers and civilians working together. The Montgomery Garrison's history begins with a small group of soldiers from Illinois who were ordered by General Andrew Jackson to garrison Chicago in 1815. The garrison served for two years before being disbanded. In 1816, General James K. Polk ordered the garrison stationed at Rock Island to be enlarged and it became known as the Montgomery Garrison. At this point in time, the army had only one regiment stationed in Illinois which was commanded by Colonel John Prentice. In 1821, Major General Clark Wade ordered a brigade totaling 10 companies to be sent westward under command of Brigadier General Samuel Troup Jr.. The unit arrived at Sauk Rapids on February 3rd and began construction on Fort Dearborn which would become their new headquarters. After spending several months building Fort Dearborn, they moved into their new place on April 1st when they received word that President George Washington had issued his famous order "You may march through any state you please" which meant that all states were allowed to join forces against Napoleon Bonaparte! The fort was completed on July 14th and served as headquarters for several weeks before being abandoned due to lack of supplies. In 1824, Colonel John Prentice decided that he wanted his own brigade so he resigned from the Montgomeryshire Regiment and formed his own brigade called “The Black Warrior” along with other officers from other brigades within the Regular Army (i.e., those not affiliated with artillery or cavalry). colonel john prentice black warrior battalion After resigning from “The Black Warrior” colonel john prentice re-formed his brigade again as part of regular army Infantry Battalion #8 under MajorGeneral Henry Dodge duringBlack Hawk War (1846-1847). In July 1861, after Confederate States of America seceded from the United States, Governor Abraham Lincoln called for 2nd Brigade (4th Infantry) National Guard Troops to serve under him in defense of Springfield Armory Arsenal located about 12 miles east of Decatur IL 61701 but no orders ever came down from general Orders Headquarters(GONH) meaning these troops never did anything more than mill around playing war games without having any real combat experience whatsoever! On October 8th 1861 Lieutenant Colonel Charles Lunsford commanding 4TH INFANTRY DIVISION Iowa Volunteers notified GONH HQ that there is an emergency coming up north near Dubuque IA 52722 & we are needed NOW!! This led directly off into what would become known as THE GREAT WHITE FLOOD OF 1862...still nobody knew what GONH actually wanted done...or even if they even did!!! Anyway back onto my story now; Lunsford said: "There isn't enough time for me to go get our horses—I'll just have my orderly sergeant bring them right up here"—to which Captain Cook replied: "No problem," since both Cooks could ride horseback--and gave Lieutenant Colonel Charles Lunsford control over 4TH INFANTRY DIVISIONIowa Volunteers' mounted formations while Captain Cook rode shotgun on foot...This event later became known as "the Battle Of Race Point". Anyway back onto my story now; Lunsford said: "There isn't enough time for me to go get our horses—I'll just have my orderly sergeant bring them right up here"—to which Captain Cook replied: "No problem," since both Cooks could ride horseback—and gave Lieutenant Colonel Charles Lunsford control over 4TH INFANTRY DIVISIONIowa Volunteers' mounted formations while Captain Cook rode shotgun on foot...This event later became known as "the Battle Of Race Point". When Confederate forces attacked Union positions at Race Point on October 8th 1861 Lieutenant Colonel Charles Lunsford rallied his troops who fought bravely but were ultimately unsuccessful against overwhelming Confederate forces led by LtColonel Robert Ewell Aiken III aka Stonewall Jackson etc.—He was eventually court martialed for dereliction of duty & loss of killed/captured officer status but resulted in only a $100 fine instead thereof.—Lunnford went on to Command Ulysses S Grant's Personal Reserve Division during World War II (& also played major role leading American Expeditionary Force into Europe)—in addition authoring book entitled 'A Soldier's History Of The Civil War'

The Montgomery Advertiser was a daily newspaper published in Montgomery, Illinois from 1881 to 1978. It had an 8-inch by 12-inch print size and was the first paper in Montgomery to be published on a continuous basis. The paper was started by John Hanchett as a weekly publication and then became an evening paper before becoming a daily in 1881. It served as the official town newspaper for Montgomery from its start until it closed down in 1978.
Montgomery is a small town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 553 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Montgomery post office has been in operation since 1872. Montgomery was laid out by citizens of Springfield on November 4, 1871, when the legislature passed an act creating McLean County. The original plat for Montgomery included only a few acres of land north of present-day State Route 6 and east of State Route 24. A year later, a road was built through the town to connect it with Springfield and other nearby communities. The early years of Montgomery were difficult; not many people came to live there because it was located close to both Springfield and Chicago. However, over time, the community matured and began to prosper from its location and business opportunities. In 1915, the first school opened in Montgomery; it was called Newton School until 1903 when it became Montrose Elementary School. In 1924, two new schools were built: Springer High School and First Presbyterian Church (now Wright Chapel church). This addition helped promote growth in Montgomery as both schools offered a variety of educational options for students. In 1970, new housing developments began to appear in downtown Montgomery; these were known as "The Commons". Today's downtown area is one of the most vibrant sections of Montgomery thanks to its variety of retail businesses and restaurants that offer fresh local cuisine as well as convenient shopping opportunities nearby. Additionally, several large parks are located within walking distance of downtown: Griggs Park near Interstate 71/127 southbound exit (northbound off ramps), Maple Lawn Park just west of I-71 exit number 3505 between University Avenue South near Uptown Square Mall (just across from Macy’s department store), Cumberland Park just east side off I-71 southbound exit at milepost 68 after Cumberland Boulevard turns into Elm Street / Old Highway 16 / White Sands Boulevard adjacent to McCracken Arms Golf Course which offers 9 holes for golfers including practice rounds during summer months

Montgomery, Illinois was founded in 1847 by James Montgomery and his brother John. The Montgomery family had been living in the area for several years when they decided to move to what is now Montgomery County, Illinois. The original farming plot that James and John purchased included a small stream that ran through their farmstead. They named their new community after General George Washington because of this water source. The first post office in Montgomery was established on November 3, 1848. By 1861, the population of Montgomerysville had grown to over 100 people. In 1865, the railroad arrived in the town and began serving as a major factor in its growth. After the Civil War ended, many soldiers returned home and started businesses inMontgomery. One such business owner was James Montgomery Sr., who reopened the old sawmill that he owned back in 1846. For many years, this mill was one of the most important economic engines within Montgomery County. In 1907, pioneer Mrs. Anna Ladd donated land to establish an Agricultural Experiment Station inMontgomery County which continues to be an important part of our local agricultural history today. This station is responsible for helping farmers around the county learn about different varieties of crops and how best to grow them so that we can provide quality food for our families
Montgomery was originally part of the town of Jacksonville, Illinois. On November 5, 1837, a decision was made to split Jacksonville in two due to the violence that had been taking place between the two townsfolk. The southernmost part of Jacksonville became Montgomery while the northernmost part became Jacksonville. The town of Montgomery grew quickly and soon there were mills and factories located in and around it. The town also became an important stop on the Underground Railroad because many slaves who could not afford to leave came to Montgomery in hopes of finding freedom. In 1853, a fire destroyed much of downtown Montgomery, but firefighters managed to douse the blaze before it could reach any buildings inside the city limits. This event is still remembered as one of Montgomery's most notorious tragedies.
