The Montgomery, Illinois Air Force Base was one of the first air forces stationed in Illinois. The base was first activated on December 3rd, 1941 and served as a training ground for the United StatesAAF during World War II. It also hosted RAF Bomber Command during the war. After the war, Montgomery AFB became an operational airport and served as a training center for both military and civilian pilots. In 1957, Montgomery AFB was renamed Memphis-Stennis Airport after General Curtis LeMay who played a significant role in establishing USAF air power supremacy in Southeast Asia. The airport continued to serve as an operational airport until it closed in 1992. Along with nearly all other American airports closed by 1992 due to budget cuts, Memphis-Stennis Airport finally reopened its doors to the public on July 1st of that year. Since then, it has been home to several aviation companies including Learjet Aviation and Boeing Co.. In addition to serving as an active airport again, Memphis-Stennis Airport has also seen use as a filming location for various movies including "Airport," "Hercules," "The Incredibles," and "Ender's Game." Montgomery is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,410 at the 2010 census. Montgomery is located in the far north-central part of the state and is bordered by Carbondale to the east, Moline to the south, and Rockford to the west. The first settlers in Montgomery were three brothers who arrived on horseback from Kentucky in 1825. They named their new community "Montgomery" after General Robert E. Lee's home county in Virginia. The name stuck and has been used ever since. In 1832, two more brothers moved into Montgomery from Henderson County, Kentucky with their families and began farming land that now includes much of downtown Montgomery. In 1835, a post office was established at what is now known as Main Street; it was renamed Monterey in 1856 when it became part of Carbondale Township. In 1865, President Abraham Lincoln visited Montgomery during his preparations for his April 14 speech on National Unionism before a joint session of Congress at Ford's Theatre across Market Street from present day Springfield Armory where he delivered that speech which helped establish Union rule over all America. A statue of Lincoln stands outside the old courthouse today (now within walking distance of most businesses). President Ulysses S Grant also visited Montgomery while on his way to Springfield for an inauguration rally on March 4th 1865 just south of town limits near Topeka following his inauguration as VicePresident four days earlier; he stopped at Main Street for lunch before continuing on to Rockford for further ceremonies One account says president Grant had dinner at Old Post Office restaurant before moving along to Rockford Another account claims he ate breakfast there During this time period one store - White House Bazaar - operated out of room upstairs in current day Gabel Building next door to Public Library until around 1870 when they moved out onto Second Avenue South All told there are multiple accounts but one which seems likely given our current understanding about early 20th century life in rural areas
