The shop was called the Coffee House and it served coffee and pastries from a small machine that ground the beans. It was run by Gertrude Heston, who also served as the store’s owner and operator. In 1916, Mr. Heston sold his business to John W. Kappaloha who renamed it The American Café. Kappaloha served coffee until he died in 1973. From then on, the café continued to be run by his children until their father passed away in 1984. At that point, it became an operational private business that continued to serve coffee until 1995 when it closed its doors for good.
