Mokena, Illinois is a small city in the northwestern corner of the U.S. state of Illinois. The population was 9,857 at the 2010 census and is estimated to be 13,715 in 2020. Mokena is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. It lies about 30 miles (48 km) north-northwest of Chicago and has a total area of just over one square mile (3 km²). Mokena has been inhabited by Native Americans for centuries, first as trade partners with other Northwest Missouri tribes and then through contact with European settlers. In 1818, when Illinois became a territory under US control, Mokena was chosen as its capital. The town's early growth was based on agriculture: until the arrival of railroads in the mid-19th century, it functioned primarily as an agricultural center for surrounding villages. The Arrival of Railroads and Other Developments: 1830s–1900s In 1830, three steamboats brought pioneers to what would become Mokena from Illinois’ northwestern frontier; within five years they had established two stores and four homes on First Street South between Lake Michigan Boulevard and Slinger Road (now Cicero Avenue). Mokena is a small town in McHenry County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,819 at the 2010 census. It is located on the north side of the mouth of the Kankakee River. The first permanent settler in Mokena was Nicholas DeBow who arrived in 1814. He and his family built a cabin on what is now Main Street. In 1832, John Stephenson purchased land near Mokena from Nicholas DeBow and erected a log cabin known as Stephenson's Store (now Wright-Patterson Hall). In 1836, George Haggerty settled in Mokena and began to outfit teams for traveling overland to Chicago. His store became one of the most important commercial centers in eastern McHenry County. The first telephone line between Mokena and Chicago was constructed through Haggerty's store in 1888. A post office called Mokena was established here in 1892; it ceased operations operation on December 15, 1906. The community experienced significant growth during World War I when many soldiers were stationed here before they were sent to battle overseas. After the war ended, many people relocated here because of new opportunities that had opened up in Illinois after the war. Makena experienced economic decline during the 1920s as farm prices plummeted due to butter production being pulled out of Illinois by then-President Warren G Harding's New Deal programs; however, it has slowly begun to recover since then with initiatives like its own unified school district which went into effect in 2003 Makena has been home to several businesses including KFC (now Kentucky Fried Chicken), Sears Roebuck & Co., JCPenney stores, Coca ColA/Coca-Cola plants (including two bottling plants), Ford Motor Company manufacturing plants and more recently American Apparel company headquarters In recent years there have been efforts made by developers interested in moving retail shopping closer to town center along with plans for an NHL hockey team which are currently under consideration by city officials
