Mokena is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,873 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1881 by Norwegian immigrants and their families who had come to America on the "Norwegian Fjords" ship. Mokena's name means "place of stones." The first settler were Jens Olsen and his family. In 1886, an act of Congress granted land for a post office in Mokena and in 1890 it became one of the towns in Cook County. In 1905, two brothers named John Wertheimer bought land north of Mokena and began developing it into what is now Midtown Park. They named their estate Wertheim Manor after their father-in-law, Friedrich Wilhelm Wertheimer (1848-1925). Mokena experienced its heyday during World War II when over 50% of all ration cards issued by the US government were issued to residents here. However, following the war, economic stability returned as manufacturing disappeared and jobs moved elsewhere in Illinois and Wisconsin.Today, Mokena retains some aspects of its wartime prosperity including its strong community spirit which has helped make it one of America's most vibrant small towns.
Mokena is a small city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 14,551 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago–Naperville–Elgin Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Mokena comes from the Potawatomi word "moki". The first settlement in what is now Mokena was made on May 10, 1836 by three brothers, Solomon, Levi and Nathan Morse. They platted their land around a bend in the Illinois River and named it after themselves – Mokena Township. In 1839, John Ladd established a sawmill on the banks of the river at present-day North Avenue and West Street. A post office called Mokena was established in 1841 and lasted until it was discontinued in 1861. In 1869, James Hutton built his large frame house on North Avenue near East 112thStreet. He became one of Mokena's earliest residents and served as its first mayor from 1870 to 1871. His wife Mary Hutton also lived here during this time period. Mrs. Hutton later moved to Elgin and joined her husband there fulltime when he became governor of Illinois in 1893). JHutton died shortly thereafter leaving behind an estate that included several houses in Mokena as well as some farmland surrounding it which he donated to various charities including the Masonic Home for Boys (now operates as an assisted living facility) . Mr./Mrs Hutton are buried beside him at Elmwood Cemetery outside of town proper within walking distance of many other family members gravesite too!
