Mokena, Illinois is a small town located in McHenry County, Illinois. The population was 3,898 at the 2000 census. The name Mokena comes from the Ojibwe word "moki," meaning "hollow." The first settlers in what is now Mokena were Native Americans who lived near the confluence of the Kankakee and White Rivers. In 1837, General David Beatty laid out a townsite on the banks of the Kankakee River called Beattyville after General David Beatty himself. Captain John Andrus founded Andrus's Store in 1839 and named it after himself. By 1840, there were two stores in Mokena and over 50 people living there. By 1850, there were only six people living in Mokena and it had a total population of just 99. After being abandoned for several years during theCivil War, Mokena was re-established as an agricultural center by Colonel Augustus Woodruff in 1865. During this time, many entrepreneurs began to settle in Mokena including Jethro Gibbs (the founder of Chicago), George Stephenson (the inventor of locomotives), Julius Kahn (founder of Kahn's Kosher Delicacies), Abram Hewitt (founder of Hewitt’s grocery store) and others. Mokena is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,569 at the 2000 census. It lies in the south-central part of Cook County and is bordered by Rockford to the east, the Village of West Beloit to the north, and Aurora to the west. The village of Mokena was organized on April 15, 1851 from parts of two other villages: Mokena Heights and Ottawa. The first post office opened in Mokena Heights on October 3, 1852. On November 6, 1856, Makena Township was organized as a result of a grant from Governor John Prentice Kneeland. On February 14, 1861 an act were passed for the organization of a new township within Cook County called Mokena Township; it was named after General Israel Putnam's Creek (the creek now known as Root), which flows through that part of Cook County. The first settler in what is now Mokena Township was James J Hogan who arrived there in March 1862 with his family from Delaware Township. He planted corn and beans on what became known as Hogan's Farmstead today’s quarter site near South First Street and Third Avenue.
