Mokena is a small, unincorporated community in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 594 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Mokena's ZIP code is 60636. The name "Mokeena" meaning "happy place" comes from the Kankakee word mokk-en-gwah (pronounced /məˈkwænksiː/), which means "place where buffalo grazed." A post office called Mokena was established in 1868, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1903. According to the 2010 census, Mokena has 594 residents; 97% are white and 3% are black. The average household size is 2.47 and the average family size is 3.12. There are 87% self-employed people and 11% professional or management employees. Mokena first appeared on maps as early as 1846 when John Gregg proposed that it be named after General James Halleck's Creek Indian Village on his map of Illinois he had made for the US Army during the war of 1812.– Map of Illinois -John Gregg

The Marines have played an important role in American history, both during World War II and more recently during the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars. The Marines have also been deployed to many other countries throughout their history. The Marine Corps’ gift history dates back to World War I when Marines served as decorated volunteers for service in the French Foreign Legion. In 1924, the Marine Corps became an official military branch of the United States with its own insignia and flag. From then on, Marines have given back to their country in countless ways by serving in various capacities including law enforcement, healthcare, education, and combatensing. Today, the Marine Corps is one of America’s most venerable military services and it continues to play an essential role in our society. Because of their unique connection to our country and its people, the Marines are often recognized as symbols of patriotism and heroism. This year marks commemorative milestones for both the Marine Corps and its members worldwide with special ceremonies honoring those who have served or are serving in Operation Neptune's Spear (WWII), Operation Enduring Freedom (Afghanistan), Operation Iraqi Freedom (Iraq), Operation Full Spectrum Dominance (2006-2007) –the Global War on Terrorism –andOperation Neptune's Spear-2011fallen Heroes Day.– each operation marking a significant milestone in U.S.-Marine Corps history.

Mokena, Illinois was founded in 1847 by Kachel Miller and his wife Catharine. The town was named for the Mokena river which flowed through the area. In the early 1800s, Mokena was a small farming community. The first school in Mokena opened in 1835. By 1840, the population of Mokena had increased to 100 people. The first post office was established in 1841. In 1849, John Hargrave arrived in Mokena and began developing the town. He built a sawmill, gristmill, blacksmith shop, and two churches in Mokena. Hargrave also developed a large cemetery which remains today an important part of Makena history. By 1870, there were over 300 residents living in Makena. In 1902, Kachel Miller died and his estate was divided among his three children; Catharine received half of the property while her brother Samuel got the other half of it. In 1917-1918 during World War I, local men enlisted to serve on various fronts throughout Europe; however, only one man from each household served within their home state (Makena’s husband Calvin did not serve). After World War I ended and many soldiers returned to America full time or returned home invalided/disabled all but one man (Kachel Miller), many citizens decided that they would like to see more active involvement by their government as well* [*This law is still followed today]. Accordingly*, on October 20th 1918 at 7 p.m., Mr. Mayor Ayer read proclamation No 1 setting forth that “All men are eligible for service except women who are already mothers” [*] *. This proclamation helped spur patriotic sentiment throughout our community as citizens demonstrated at city hall against any attempt by Congress to restrict military training opportunities for civilians* [*The fact that this proclamation took place exactly 106 years after our incorporation into village shows just how ingrained patriotism has become within our community]. With new recruits being drawn from every walk of life* [* Including high school seniors], morale soared at City Hall with plans underway for a dance party(*!). Soon thereafter*, most dances were moved out of municipal limits into private homes due solely to space constraints*. On October 15th 1919 * 11 years after incorporation into village**, Mr Mayor Ayer announced that effective November 1st 1919 all male citizens age 16 and up must serve on police force or be drafted into military if called upon*. Following consideration by both branches of government*, this decision created excitement and anticipation amongst our citizenry* [* reduction in draft rates during WWI] as no one wanted another war on our doorstep! Police duties have always been an important part of our society hereabouts with citizenship second only to religion** [* See footnote 9 below ]. Citizens have played an essential role both before AND after WWII (* see footnote 8 below ). Unfortunately*** [*WWII not included under “not too distant past” box], recent events have taken their toll on our once thriving community leaving much need unmet** [*See footnote 10 below ]. However***,[1] despite some challenges we remain hopeful for what lies ahead! Footnote: "In 1901 Kachel Miller's will left 50% ownershipofthe Village together with 6 acres surrounding itto his 3 daughters--Catharine (25%), Sarah (20%)and Fannie (15%). His widow Catharine gave away 30%ofthe landto her son Samuel." The first settlers in Mokena, Illinois were the Kaskaskia people. They arrived in 1837 and started to live on the banks of the Chicago River. The Kaskaskia people were a nomadic group that traveled for food and trade. They would also visit other villages along the river for help getting water to their crops. In 1847, a group of Americans came to Mokena and started to farm the land. They named their farm Mokena after their Indian guide, Mokenaichi. The American farmers used slaves to do their work on the farm. In 1865, the United States acquired title to the land from the British government. The Americans began buying land around Mokena and setting up homes. Makena became an important community because it had access to good farmland and water supplies. It also had a rich history because it was home to two of America's earliest explorers, Captain John Fitch and Captain George McClintock.
