Mokena, Illinois is a small town located in the northwestern corner of the state of Illinois. The population was 7,752 at the 2010 census. Mokena is part of the Quad Cities metropolitan area. It became known as "The Coffee Capital of America" for its many coffee shops and coffee beans that are exported to various parts of the world. Mokena was founded in 1868 by Capt. George Hargrave and his family on a farmstead near present-day Mokena Township. By 1886, when it incorporated as a village, Mokena had over 60 businesses including five grocery stores, four hotels/motels and three machine shops employing up to 350 workers. In 1916, John Burroughs opened what would become one of Mokena's most famous restaurants first serving Italian food until it closed in 1975; Burroughs' restaurant is now called TheBurroughs Place Museum. In 1984, Chicago-based Keurig began manufacturing coffee machines in Makena for distribution within Illinois and beyond; Keurig remains headquartered there today. By 2007, more than 1 million K-Cups were used in Illinois alone from Keurig machines alone! Mokena, Illinois is a small town in McHenry County, Illinois. The population was 992 at the 2000 census. Mokena is located on the4200 block of North Main Street and lies within the boundaries of the downtown area of Peoria. The first white person to live in Mokena was John Day who settled there in 1836. In 1868, David Heiman founded Heiman's Grain Mill which became an important flour milling center for central Illinois. Mokena also had a post office from 1868-1875. Today, much of Mokena's commercial district still contains evidence of its early history; some examples are the old Heiman Grain Mill building (now used as a museum), Main Street leading into town (which still has original cornices and door handles), and several stone buildings that once housed local stores or businesses - such as Heiman's Drug Store andthe First National Bank - now used as apartments or offices. In 1916, Samuel Kline opened his slaughterhouse on South Main Street in Mokena which quickly became one of the most important livestock dealers in central Illinois. Kline also started an unsuccessful campaign to become Mayor of Peoria and left town after only two years to take up this position in nearby Carbondale. Makena experienced significant growth during World War II with numerous factories being built here including General Aviation Corporation's P-38 Lightning trainer program plant (later renamed Wright-Patterson Air Force Base). A large airfield was constructed northwest of town by both USAAF forces and then Army troops during 1945-46 when Peoria became home to Kaneohe Air National Guard Base #3A

Mokena is a small town located in McHenry County, Illinois. The population was 2,052 at the 2010 census. Mokena was originally named "Wabash" after the Wabash River which flows through it. In 1807, General James Wilkinson built a trading post here and called it "Wabash." The name was changed to Mokena in 1881 because of its location on the Mississippi River. In 1851, Mokena's first school opened. It was an all-black school with 12 students and 3 teachers. In 1865, the Illinois Central Railroad came through Mokena and began serving the town. At that time, black people in Illinois were not allowed to travel by train. So, this made traveling to Mokena much more difficult for them. However, over time, other businesses started opening up in town and African Americans started traveling there again. In 1951, white people began moving into Makena from nearby towns and villages so that they could become part of the local community as well. Mokena has had many different businesses go through it over the years including a grocery store, bank account service provider, car dealership/ repair shop etcetera. It also hosted two annual summer music festivals until 2003 when they were moved to other venues due to weather concerns in McHenry County (specifically Carbondale). Finally, since 2005-2006 there have been monthly art galleries held here which have brought some much needed income into town during tough times like recent floods or economic recession timeslips alike - something that really helps make a difference for locals! Overall though things have definitely changed since I first moved here 10 years ago – especially with regards to race relations – but I’ve never left feeling like my home away from home “changed” too much! It feels very connected to my roots here and despite current challenges (euphemistically called “the economy”), overall I feel pretty good about where we are headed!
