Mokena, Illinois is located in the United States of America and is an unincorporated community. It has a population of about 5,000 people. The name Mokena comes from the Ojibwe language and means "place where deer live." The community was founded in 1892 by John Ladd and his wife, Emma. They named it after their hunting grounds in Minnesota. Mokena became a town in 1915 when it was annexed by Rockford. The population grew to over 10,000 by 1930. Mokena experienced economic stagnation during the Great Depression but bounced back with strong growth since World War II until the early 1990s when several factors led to a decline in its residents: high taxes and infrastructure deficiencies; sluggish job market; dwindling enrollment at local schools; and suburbanization of the area caused by lure of jobs in nearby Rockford or Chicago. Since 2000, however, Mokena has seen renewed growth as a result of new development around its central business district – including businesses that have moved into formerly abandoned warehouses or factories – as well as initiatives such as downtown revitalization which have bolstered public involvement and created opportunities for arts programming, education and recreation within walking distance of most residents’ homes. In addition to this recent resurgence, Mokena is also home to two colleges export-oriented universities: Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC)serving Carbondale/Mokena Township and Northern Illinois University Edwardsville (NIU), serving Winfield Township/Beloit Township on the North side of town center.

Mokena is a town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 7,466 at the 2010 census. Mokena is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1853 by German immigrants and was named for the Mikene River which flows through the town. The first post office was established in 1854 and the first store opened in 1855. In 1865, Mokena became a city when it merged with neighboring Aurora. In 1922, Mokena merged with Plainfield to form Plainfield-Mokena Township. Mokena has been noted as one of "The 100 most liveable towns" by Money magazine and "America's happiest small city" by CNNMoney. A study released in 2018 found that crime rates have decreased over the past several years while property values have increased due to its location near Loop 1 and other major thoroughfares. The study also found that Mokena had one of the lowest poverty rates among American cities studied (3% of residents living below 60% of their means).

The city was founded in 1872 by Methodist clergymen as a log cabin community on the banks of the Kane River. The first post office was established in 1873. In 1907, Mokena became part of the new City of Chicago annexed from Aurora Township. The Manufacturing and Trading Company built a flour mill and sawmill on the river in 1887. For many years it was one of the largest mills in Cook County. The company ceased operations in 1920 and its products were sold to other companies until it closed its doors forever in 1972. In 1922, Illinois Senator James Wickersham proposed that Mokena be made into a town withenvisions for retail trade and an agricultural center similar to those being developed around Carbondale and Decatur nearby. A group of civic leaders gathered to discuss these ideas and designed what would become known as "The Town Plan." On July 1, 1923, Mokena became a townsite under this plan with $30,000 raised from local property Owners meeting on July 12 at One Lumber Store near downtown. The following year saw another surge in development when plans were made for what would become North Park Shopping mall which opened its doors on November 24th 1929 after two years of construction costing over $225 thousand dollars! At that time North Park comprised almost all present-day Mokena including much of downtown! This mixed use development created significant job opportunities for locals throughout the early decades while also bolstering tax collections for city coffers; something that has continued to this day!
