The area that would become Mokena was first settled by Kaskaskia Indians in 1795. A post office called "Mokena" was established in 1836, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. The town of Mokena was platted on August 15, 1881 by whites who had bought land east of present-day Mokena Municipal Airport. The town name honors General James Pemberton's brother-in-law Major George Hennepin (1788-1869), who served as a colonel during the American Civil War and afterward helped organize Illinois' agricultural community. The city was incorporated as a village on December 13, 1903. On February 25, 1907, it became an incorporated town when all of Macon County were annexed into the new state of Illinois. The original plat for Mokena showed only one block so construction began quickly to add blocks until there were four blocks within two years and by 1912 there were ten blocks built including a downtown block which still stands today. On July 6, 1929 local org chartered "First National Bank" with $5 million capitalization as America's first national bank charter issued from Chicago under Jenson Act #2145 In 1961 First National Bankshares acquired Allstate Life Insurance Company becoming America's largest life insurance company with over $100 billion worth of assets as of September 30th 2006
