The history of the Army in Mokena, Illinois dates back to 1851 when the first military unit was organized in this community. The local militias were disbanded in 1861, but the Army was reactivated two years later and took up arms against Indians on a seasonal basis. In 1871, Mokena became the permanent home of an American Legion post. The post served as a recruiting ground for soldiers from all over the Midwest who fought during World War I and II. In 1951, Mokena’s city government merged with that of neighboring Rockford to form one municipality. The City Council voted to name its new municipal building Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Park in honor of those who have served our country. Today, the Army Reserve Armory is located in Makena and is used by both the military and law enforcement agencies.

Mokena, Illinois is a town in and the county seat of McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 11,624 at the 2010 census. Mokena is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1856 by Dutch immigrants on land that served as a farmstead for three years before being auctioned off to settlers. Mokena became an incorporated town on December 15, 1872. A post office called Mokena was established in 1873 and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1914. Mokena is named after General David Hunter's family home at Komenakee Creek near present-day Mokena Township. The creek name had been applied to several places north of Mokena since European settlement began; the first known use of the name "Konenakee" appears to be from a deed from Peter Minnis dated November 22, 1684 which mentions a mill site at "Konenakee", about south of today's village center on Raccoon River. In 1792 John Stephenson built a gristmill hereabouts and named it Stevenson Mills after himself and his brother-in-law James Stevenson (1748–1826), who ran it with assistance from Elijah White (1753–1820). In 1811 general John Logan visited this site while campaigning against Native American forces under Chief Wabash near Dixontown east of Decatur County; he ordered all available white men within five miles () to take arms and march thence to Dixontown or Kilpatrickstown under pretense of stopping Indian hostilities thereabouts; but instead they marched into Indian country where they were attacked and looted by our Chiefs [the Pawnees]chiefs’ families exception being that of George Rogers Clark (1767–1846) who successfully defended himself with his small force until help arrived.) On July 10, 1830 Isaac Stevens bought 2/5ths interest in Stevenson Mills from James Stevenson for $200 dollars cash – one mile long main road leading thence intersecting Komenakee Creek opposite current day Komenakee Road south side). The school house still stands just south side old US Highway 20 bridge over Racoon River across bridge now owned by State Street Bridge LLC) . One mile southeast corner current day Old US Hwy 309 intersection with Racoon River also now owned by State Street Bridge LLC.) . At first only blacksmiths did forge swords but soon other trades such as wagon making started too so shop moved back home In 1861 two brothers Charles Sennett & Everett Gilette opened what became known as "Sennett's Tavern". They sold beer and food until 1865 when they closed because Union troops burned their store during the Civil War Battle of Springfield Armory specifically targeting Sennett's Tavern occupants because liquor sales were considered treasonous activity punishable by death under Union law So much for America’s free market! Makena is located at 40°31′N 86°27′W / 40.8773 N 86.4167 W / -87.02757 latitude and 83.83333 longitude according to the United States Geological Survey map data .
