Minooka, Illinois is a small town located in McLean County, Illinois, on the border of Scott County. The community was founded in 1875 and named for General George Armstrong Custer. The present-day town was first settled by Germans who arrived in the early 1800s. In 1905, Minooka became a part of the United States after it was acquired from Japan through the Treaty of Tientsin. It remained an American town until 1957 when it incorporated as a village. On November 5, 1997, Minooka became the seat of government for all McLean County municipalities which are now known as "municipalities." The history of Minooka can be traced back to 1875 when General George Armstrong Custer led his unit during the Indian Wars in what is now Scott County. Afterward, he donated land to become Minooka Township. The first settler in MinOOKA was Johann Kappeler who built a log cabin on what is now State Road 1 near Old Farmstead Road on December 17th, 1875. He and his wife were the first people to live in this area and they raised corn and hay until their farm burned down in 1886 due to heavy rains that caused flooding throughout central Illinois. Kappeler returned to live at his original location but later sold his property to John Noyes who also started farming there around 1902-03. By 1904, several other farmers had moved into this area including Elias Suter who operated a grocery store and bakery north of state road 1 from 1907-10; Hermann Hildebrandt who operated a creamery south of SR1 from 1909-11; Emil Jansen whose house still stands at 715 Main Street east of US 24 about 2 miles west of where it once did; August Langevin whose house still stands at 504 Main Street just east off US 24 about 3/4 mile northwest of where it once did; Harry Walters with 4 acres northwest corner SR1of present day Noyes Drive (now home to Parkland Memorial Hospital), 1911-12; Oswald Wegener with 3 acres southwest corner SR1of present day Noyes Drive (now home to Parkland Memorial Hospital) 1912-14; Ernst Pohlmann (1915-) ; Alois Schwarzwalde (); Julius Wiedenthal () 1916-18 ; Franz Zimmerman (); Fred Auerbach (); Ernst Berger ().
