In 1959, Minooka became home to its own water tower after construction began on what would become Kane County's first water plant – now known as Lake Michigan Water Tower #1. The village also constructed its own schoolhouse – now used as a community center. In 1983, Minooka won an award from the National Park Service for being one of America’s “10 Most Literate Towns”! Today, Minooka continues to be an important community with strong cultural connections to its surrounding rural communities and villages throughout Kane County. Minooka is a small town in McHenry County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,362 at the 2010 census. It was named after the Native American tribe of Ojibwe who lived there before European settlement. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Minooka were French voyageurs in 1763. They erected a trading post on the banks of the Ottawa River and called it Fort de Chartres. In 1768, Majerus built a new fort on the same site and renamed it Fort Snelling because he had discovered an oil well near present-day Minneapolis. The post served as a military depot until 1802 when it was abandoned due to development along the river south of Minooka. In 1836, John Workman founded Workman's Store in what is now Minooka and started selling goods from his store until 1840 when he opened his own store. In 1851, George Hennepin established a sawmill and grist mill at present-day Minooka for grinding lumber for churches and other buildings in Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania; but these mills never became active due to lack of water power. In 1872, John Fisk opened a grocery store at present-day Minooka which soon became known for its excellent seafood items available fresh from local fisheries or frozen from local shipments. His store continued to be one of the most popular tourist attractions in town until 1979 when it closed down due to economic reasons. In 1902, Averill Harriman donated land at present-day MinOOKA for use as an open air market which quickly grew into one of IL's largest markets providing farmers with fresh produce and meats not found anywhere else in the state during that time period; also making available fresh flowers year round! The market continued operations until 1977 when it closed down again due to economic reasons once again !! This market has been reborn as "Market Central" located just off I-635 north of downtown since 2009 !! Prior to this reopening event there was only limited access by visitors outside business hours so we are excited about finally having this much needed commercial space back open to all our residents & visitors alike !!

The population of Minooka increased from about 1,500 in 1870 to over 10,000 by 1910. In 1916, Minooka became an incorporated village.
