Minooka is a small town in the southern part of Illinois, United States. It is located on the banks of the Mississippi River. The population was 5,756 at the 2010 census. The name Minooka comes from the Ojibwe word "noki" meaning "milk". The first white settlers in Minooka were James and Margaret Ladd who arrived in 1827. They founded a log cabin and began to trade goods with other farmers and traders along the river. In 1838, they Added land to their holdings which included present-day Minooka Township and much of Adams County. In 1871, John Fenton purchased 640 acres (224 hectares) of land south of the village center from Amos Hodge for $8 per acre ($ 140,000). This area bounded by current-day Harrison Street on one side and Rush Road on the other side including what is now eastbound Rush Road became known as Fenton Land Grant Park after him. A post office was established at Minooka in 1872, but it did not operate until 1897 when it was moved to its present site across from town hall. The first store in town opened in 1907 under proprietorship by C W Hargrave & Son who also operated a large gristmill that still flourishes today. The milling industry declined during World War II due to shortages of supplies; however, some relics from this time can be seen around town such as an early 20th century windmill tower now used as a weighbridge and an old corn crib still standing dating back to 1840s that can be toured inside the new visitor center open since 2007 housed within Heritage Village Incorporated adjacent to downtown minOOKA The post office closed because no one wanted to carry mail anymore following World War II; however, local residents continue to deliver mail using horse or wagon until 1959 when wires were brought down between buildings near Main Street crossing where Highways 63/I-294 currently run today providing easy access for drivers passing through town without having to stop Fenton's heirs sold most of his property west of Highway 63/I-294 prior to his death in 1966 so that it would become part of Rush Road State Park which remains today one of only two state parks remaining contiguous with Adams County outside Chicago . In 1984 Fenton's granddaughter sold additional lands east off highway I-294 extending into Adams County forming Heritage Village Incorporated which includes many original structures dating back over 100 years including an early home built by pioneer farmer Elijah Porter located just north of downtown . Today there are more than 350 residents living within Heritage Village boundaries making it one of largest villages active withinAdams County . Minooka is a city in Illinois, United States. The population was 3,824 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cook County.minooka Minooka was founded by settlers in 1828 and named for John A. Minook, an early settler in that area. The town had a post office from 1849 to 1907 and a school from 1857 to 1906. It became the county seat of Cook County on July 1, 1916, when all of Cook County was created from portions of Kane and DuPage counties. The first mills in Minooka were built around 1830 by Captain Nathaniel Goodspeed and his son-in-law Ebenezer Griggs as part of their milling business operations near present day Orchard Park and Palatine Road (now Lake Shore Drive). By 1840 there were 10 mills in MinOOKA with flour production accounting for 60% of all exports from the town during that time period! In 1850 Captain Goodspeed's grandson took over his father's milling business but soon after went bankrupt due to low flour prices caused by American Civil War efforts to block British imports into America. In 1865 Captain Goodspeed's widow sold her share of the business to her husband who continued running it until his death in 1924. Thereafter it passed through several hands before becoming part of the Brown family ownership group which purchased it outright in 1949.. In 1957 local high school students organized a bake sale as an event promoting community service projects along Chicago Shopping Centers corridors throughout Chicagoland resulting in $1,500 being raised for various causes including building roadsides houses across Chicago! After many years languishing on their property they tore down most everything except one single story tenant’s units with access only via ramps leading up onto adjacent lots! The extant buildings are now used as office space by nearby businesses! In addition to its physical assets such as dams and reservoirs dating back over 250 years; MinOOKA has also preserved important historical artifacts including photographs, newspapers articles, etc., within its walls which have been stored inside ever since!
The first known European settlement in Minooka was by French traders in 1763. The area now includes Minooka and Clearwater counties, Illinois. A post office called Minooka was established in 1834, and the town became a village in 1907.
